Just bought a new X bolt SS in 270 cal. I’m loading 130 gr Nosler B Tips. The books says 3.34 OAL.
Well that is super tight in my gun bolt won’t close. I made a dummy round and it comes out at 3.25 OAL feels good, bolt closes well.

This common? Is that too much bullet in the case ? 3.25 OAL fine

Thanks All

Hmm, I load my .270 BAR out to 3.34 no problem with a sliver of room left in the mag. Are you sure you can't go 3.34"? The .270 is a SAAMI spec cartridge, all chambers should be able to take a COAL of 3.340".

If the brass is a problem, it will show when you try chambering a sized case only (ie no powder and bullet). Experienced reloaders will always do this test with newly sized brass before loading them up.

Doesn't sound like a magazine fit issue if you are talking about a bolt closing problem with a potentially over length round. Is the bullet hitting the lands at 3.34"?

It sounds as though your rifle has a shorter throat than many .270s. If a round with an OAL of 3.25" chambers properly, it wouldn't appear to be the brass. You can't assume that an OAL listed in a reloading manual will necessarily work in your gun. What I do is determine what OAL gets the bullet just kissing the lands (I use the Hornady OAL gauge for this) and then back off at least .025" for hunting rounds. You need to determine the optimal OAL for your gun, not what others have used.

I'm not a reloader but do you have a factory round to compare length to to see if your gun is different or your brass is off?

I had a BSA rifle in 270 Winchester that had a very short throat.
IIRC, a 130 Partition seated to a COL of 3.25 was touching the lands
in that rifle. It was a good shooter, regardless. Dave.

Thank Guys.
Brass was fired in my gun. Yes when I close the bolt at 3.34 the bullet seems to be tight. And then bolt hard to close. But at 3.25 all seem good
