.270, Good, ok or bad

I'm a fan of the .270. I don't own one, though. I have a .280, and that's pretty darn close. I grew up shooting my Dad's Model 70 push feed chambered in .270. Very accurate rifle, and put a lot of deer down.
I'm not crazy about Savage, but I do respect their accuracy. I certainly wouldn't have any issues hunting with someone who was carrying a Savage. As long as the hunter was responsible and ethical, and fun guy to hang out with, I couldn't care less what kind of gun he carried.

so I will give you some simple advice, evident to anyone who has hunted for any time. While the Savage rifle may get the job done in the field, you may want to save up your money until you can buy a real gun.

If I could not afford a real rifle, I would not hunt. Others buy the Savage.

That right there is the dumbest bunch of dung I have yet to read on CGN. If you have nothing rational to say, then >>>:stfun00b:

I've heard that research shows that sectional density and aerodynamics of 6.8mm bullets tend to perform best. Is that BS?

Wikipedia said:
In tests, it was determined that a 6.5mm projectile had the best accuracy, but a 7mm projectile had the best terminal performance. Further tests showed that a 6.8mm projectile was the best compromise between the two, providing accuracy, reliability and terminal performance up to 500 meters.

The .270 is a 6.8mm. Maybe that's some of the reason for the magic...?

As to speaking of the .270 WIN. My experience with it was in a rifle I absolutely hated and was more than happy to trade for an old sporterized P17. That said I was so impressed with the round however that even though the gun is long gone and I do not have another .270 in the locker I still have a box and a half of ammo because I know for a fact the next hunting rifle I buy will be in .270. Infact right now I am killing myself trying to decide my next purchase, a pristine collector C no7 Enfield or a new Marlin XL7 in .270 and some nice glass.

OH Yeah, if I had to say anything unkind about savage rifles, it is that the spacing of the scope bases on LONG ACTION savage rifles is REALLY FAR APART. It is definately something to consider. I had a terrible time trying to find a scope to fit it. I had a couple of Bushnell 3200 3-9x40 and a Leupold VX1 and I had to get an extension ring just to get the ring off one bell housing. It left me with about 1mm of adjustment space for eye relief. (I even had to dremell out some of the ring base to get it to allow the bell housing not to come in contact with the base. You'll almost have to get a long tubed scope to allow any type of forward/rear position adjustment. Just look for yourself. I was actually kind of shocked at how much trouble it caused me. BUT THE RIFLE shot like a hot damn. So it was a small sacrifice in the end. (always was a little nervous being that it was a .300 win mag and a 116 ss weather warrior. The scopes eye piece Touched eyebrow hair at least once every 9 or 10 shots)

Buy a set of dual extention mounts, i have a very short tube scope and have over 1 1/2 inches of adjustment.

Don't Leave Home With Out One!

The .270. It's my go to rifle. I take it for deer, moose, bear and has nailed a few coyotes over the years also.

I to have been thinking of a .270 but have been going between the Savage 111 and the Mossberg 4x4.Any feed back would be appr.

The .270 is one of the best chamberings available. Ammo is cheap and readily available, the recoil is fairly mild and it is capable of taking all North American game.

The last one I owned was fed a steady diet of RL22 and 130gr TSX bullets. It was very effective.
