I am a fairly new CGN'er and i am fairly new gun owner. I have spent quite a bit of time at the range punching paper but I am going to be going on my first hunting trip with a few friends from different areas of the province. i am going to be taking my parker hale .270

so far i always just buy the cheap federal ammo for target practice to keep it affordable. What are your suggestions for deer hunting with a .270 as far as ammo options go?

thanks!

Shoot what your gun shoots well. Those bullets are fine. My .270 only shot Fusions well until I hand loaded then it loved its 'special diet'. :)
Confidence in your firearm is probably better than fancy bullet construction. Good shots with poor bullets probably kill better than bad shots with great bullets.......

If you've developed a comfort level with the Federal ammo, that is reason enough to stay with it. My experience with Federal factory .30/06 it is that it is very uniform, and see no reason why the similar .270 would not be. Use in the field what you're familiar with on the range. The .270 was killing stuff long before premium bullets showed up. Once you begin handloading you can experiment with different bullets, throughout the year, but just before heading afield is not the time to do so.

My 270 shoots 130 gr Winchester grey box very well and when it comes to deer this is all that is required. The 270 has plenty of poop for deer. If you want to go for elk one day or to a lesser degree moose than you can invest the time and money finding a premium bullet that your gun shoots well.

Have fun. G

The 270 should kill a deer no matter what bullets you use. I used one for several years and put down a half dozen animals with basic hollowpoints. And cheap gas station ammo accounts for thousands of deer every year. Shot placement counts though, a sudden switch in ammo right before going hunting might not be wise.

Always hunt with the same ammo you practice with

Yup.

I haven't found a gun that shoots that cheap federal stuff poorly. It's just plain good cheap ammo.

I always used the 150 grain because I mainly shoot moose. Most of them were in the same slough at ranges of 75 to 300 yards and most bullets passed through when hit in the lung. The ones I recovered were usually a perfect mushroom. The odd one had core separation but that's to be expected with a cup and core bullet.

I never had one grenade or waste meat if I did my part.

thanks guys thats really helpful! you see a lot of people on here with very specific ammo loads, and i guess that is once you have tried a number of different handloads and factory rounds that you determine which one you have the best results with. i am confident with what i have been shooting, so i will continue!

thanks!

"...Always hunt with the same ammo you practice with..." Yep. And you need to practice shooting, off hand, at a 9" pie plate, at 100 yards, until you can hit it every time. Then sight in three inches high at 100. The cost of the ammo is irrelevant.

I always prefer just under 2" high @ 100 yards with a 270. Any bullet around 130-160 grains traveling @ around 2900 - 3000 fps for that matter.

I've never had to take a shot past 300 yards in 30 years and that formula works for me.

one of the guys i am hunting with - uses a .270 - he told me 2" high @ 100 yards is what he always done - so i think im gunna run with that.

ill let you know how it goes!

thanks,

Aim for the center of the lung area with a 270 and you're good to almost 300 yards sighted in like that. You most likely won't be shooting past 150 and more than likely about 75.

If you're on the mark with the ammo you've been playing with, stick with it. You'll do good and fill your freezer.

I was in your boat a couple years ago, I found that 130gr remington core-lokt shot the same as the 130 gr federal "blue box" ammo out of my gun, but the 130gr core-lokt sure puts them down quick, but the federal does just as good of a job. I sight my .270 in 2" high @100 yards. Works awesome if you might have to take a longer shot, less compensation needed. Good luck this year!

You need to use the same ammo for practice as you do for hunting as the POI could be quite different for different ammo.
