.270 or 30-06

If you never buy another hunting rifle, which is highly unlikely; get the '06.

If you plan on getting more than one gun, at least one should be an '06 anyway, so get it first. It will make buying your second gun a much easiar decision.

30-06 is where the manly cartridges start, the 270 is for girlymen only.

The smart choice would be ther 308 as suggested by a few guys.

Doesn't that mean the .308 is a girly cartridge too? It is weaker than your 30-06 cut off isn't it? I'd rather hit my moose with a 270 than miss him with a 375 H&H...

270 shoots a bit flatter, 30-06 makes little bigger hole.

I've never seen a game animal that could tell the difference, if properly hit with either one.

I suggest you go shoot some rifles, and see if you have a personal preference.

I have both calibers and actually prefer the .270. My son chose the 30-06 and we both target shoot. They shoot very much the same at 100 and at 200 yards. Either one will get the job done, but the .270 probably with less recoil and meat damage.

Oh come on, I love to hear this year's reason why one is obviously superior to the other. :D You know, stuff like "the 30 cal sets up a hydrostatic shock wave that actually makes moose cells commit suicide and causes instant death, gutting and skinning to happen. The 270 is blah blah blah..."

I heard they used to kill animals with blunt rocks and pointed sticks. If those two methods work, either caliber should make it really easy.

Neither...get a 280 Remington .
I have 270s, 30-06s and a 308 but my killing gun is my Model 700 Remington AS in 280 Remington .
I load 139 grain Hornadys over 60.7 grains of H4831 giving me a velocity of 3000'\sec . With this bullet I've shot everything from Partridges to Moose from 10 yards to over 500 and all mostly were one shot kills .
I've killed more than 28 deer, moose, bear and wolves in 6 years with this gun....not counting the two years that I didn't pull the trigger on anything .

I suspect the one game animal that took you two shots to do in was the partridge...tough little bugars they are:D

I saw a moose that was hit with a .270. Just looked around for the guy that shot him....told him to f**k off and went merrily on his way.:D

I wish i had one round of .308 for every 270 vs. 30-06 comparison I have read. Load a 130 grain in the 30-06 or .308 and end up with the same place.

This thread is funny. The 30-06 is better because you can go into any hardware store from st. john's Newfoundland to Victoria BC and get a box of 30-06 or 30-30 as for .270 I dunno.....

i thought a catridge would'nt kill a moose unless it had wsm behind it!!!!.
if your a true gun whore you'll by both anyway.
