A friend of mine asked me about rifle calibers yesterday for his 12 and 15 year old boys. They both passed their Hunters Education course. I suggested a 243 in a Remington model seven or a youth Savage pkg deal. For the 12 yr old said either a 270 or 7mm-08. The will be hunting deer, and maybe the occasional moose/elk with their dad. My buddy prefers to have a detachable clip for the rifles.

What are your thoughts on calibers and rifle brands. Thanks for the input.:shotgun:
 
You can get one of savage packages in a 270 calibler from SIR for $399 it comes with a detachable clip and mounted scope. The scope and mount may not be the best but the gun shoots well. I just came from the range and got it hitting 3" groups at 200yds...That's not bad for my second time shooting a center fire.....

Factory loads in the .270 and 7-08 may be a bit stiff for a very young shooter. If your buddy handloads, he can download either of those cartridges and move up to faster loads as the boys grow. My 15 year old has been using the 7-08 for a couple years now and shoots it better than I can. We started him out on mild 120 gr loads in the 2400 fps range that he found much more comfortable than the factory stuff.
 
One big plus is the ammo availability for the 270. I went thru the same debate, a nice 270 came my way first. I'm glad it did, the 7-08 certainly wins the interesting contest, but the 270 is the more practical of the two in most cases. I can't see recoil being an issue with either
 
I would go with the 7mm-08.It comes in a short action and you could probably find a compact sized rifle ideal for a young shooter.Recoil is quite mild.Both my wife and daughter have shot the 7-08,as I own 2.
The only reason I would choose the .270 over the 7-08 would be ammo availability.
 
Id go with the .270 personally I don't care for any cartridge based off a .308 but thats my opinion. Carrying a bit extra weight, not that its much will only make the boy stronger, chicks dig the strong guys :D
Id also reccomend tossing any recoil pad on a Savage and throwing a Limsaver, I believe all remingtons now use them.

7mm08 or 270

I sold or traded all my 270's off and kept my Remington 7mm08. I like the shorter action required for 308 rounds as it reduces the weight, a saving on weight can make a difference when carry it for a day. Recoil of 7mm08 is light compared to 270, I think it's a good starter gun that won't make a young shooter flinch.
I would like to have a Ruger No1 in 7mm08, I have one in 7 X 57 but factory loads are light.
The ammo for 270 is readily available, but I suspect if you don't contact your Canadian Tire store now and request they have some 7mm08 for hunting season chances are they won't have any. Retail stores don't have any idea of what to stock because they only carry the regular stuff, 30-30, 308, 30-06. There must be a request by the public to someone that orders ammunition for the store. It may not be an employee that works there or head office.
 
Why you choose a 7-08?...low recoil w/ great shootability and down range efficiency, short action, instant accuracy, confidence, historically a target calibre...must reload to get best performance at top end...lots of bullets to choose from...larger frontal diameter.

Why you choose a .270? ammo availability (walmart, C.T.), Jack O'connor, Winchester, very stout recoil, lots of guns built in .270 Win (choose the manufacture)...lots of used .270's available out there...

I vote for the 7-08 as I own 2 of them...Rem SPS and a Savage w/accutrigger.

It's really expensive but Kimber makes a beauty light weight 7-08 Montanna, it can be kept in the family for generations and it's light enough for serious sheep hunting, just thought I'd veer off the beaten path. Good luck with helping your friend!!!
 
I also use a 7-08. Sold my 270 and my 280 and never felt handicapped with the little 7 for deer, moose, elk or black bear.

If you run out of ammunition on a hunt,or forget to bring any and must depend on finding some at a rural store,you haven't planned very well.I have never had either happen in over 30 years of hunting.

ur right I was pointing to the strong heritage of the cartridge and that it has stood the test of time and been used to take possibly every big game animal on the planet...:)

Once again,the cartridges heritage or history does not make it perform any better or any worse.
 
7mm08 bleh!:puke: .270 is the ###ier of the two. ( I can't come up with any practical difference between the two. So an emotional response is the only one I can come up with!:D)
