Premise : Seeking a good all around round for hoofed animals.

1) Will be going over hill and dale, so lightwight would be a positive
2) Should have enough hitting power to take game in single shot at 200+ yards (Yes, yes shot placement, but the point here is a good humane power)

Having never fired/used a .270 WSM, anyone who has used both have an opinion and why on these? Also, is there another round and why you would consider

The .270 Win is one of the best balanced cartridges available. It offers plenty of performance with relatively mild recoil. There are lots of good choices out there that will humaely kill big game to 200 yards. It's actually hard to pick a bad chambering!

The good-old .270WCF gives you 5 rounds. The .270WSM only 3 rounds (but who needs more?), Arguably another 150-200 FPS and a shorter bolt-throw action which is kinda handy, but no biggy. You'll never have a problem finding .270WCF ammo and it's cheaper. You can't go wrong either way. My only recommendation be it's in a Winchester Super-Grade.

Love the two 270WSM's I have - Tikka T3 in the LS models. Shoot 140gr Accubonds. Great performance at the range and on big game. I really like hunting with this combo. My reloads are close to 3300 ft/s.

The 270WSM will have higher velocities than the 270Win...To each their own. If you use factory ammo, the 270Win might be more readily found/available that the 270WSM if you are in a pinch and not near the bigger towns/cities.

+1

The whole short mag thing was an answer to a question that nobody asked. They both have their legions. The 270 wsm is a minor improvement over the 270 win (couple hundred fps), but neither make deer any more dead.

The next best caliber for overall after the 308 is the old 270, no need for WSM but if you do they will give you extra range, 130 gr of 270 at 350 yards is a wonderfull bullet... JP.

A friend and I were target shooting a year ago, he had the short mag and I had the regular .270. We swapped rifles and I don't recall much more recoil from the short mag but the report seemed more pronounced and sharp.

He has had trouble finding ammo at times and often it was $45 a box or so.

I guess it's something new to tickle someones fancy but there's not enough of an improvement over the regular .270 to make me switch.

You can pick the 308, the 30-06 or the 270 and feel good knowing that you picked the best caliber. I prefer the 30-06 because it is the most versatile of the bunch....125 grains up to 220 grains... no one matches that and if you use factory hot loads than a 30-06 shoots just like a 7mm mag so you know you got lots of extra oomph should you need it. No other caliber does that...no one. And 30-06 ammo...is....everywhere.

Always wanted a model 70 found one in 270wsm sold my 270win Vanguard(that I liked), I will never sell this one, neither I nor the deer can tell the difference in the caliber.

For those who get hung up on the extra 100-200 fps that the short mag produces, bear in mind that Hornady's Superformance .270 Win loads run right on the heels of the WSM. Personally I would take the standard .270.

I think it boils down to a matter of choice, if you want the 270 WSM, go for it.
At the present time here in BC factory ammo seems to be hard to find and that is a fact because I've made a few calls.
My Son has a 270 WSM and a 300 WSM..... the 300 is a whole bunch easier to find, almost every shop I called had a few boxes.
This however means little to the handloader because usually a good supply of brass is available at the big box stores for any of the short mags.

Jack O'Connor had it right, it's hard to improve upon perfection. EVERYONE should own at least one 270 Win.

Then buy all the other .277 chamberings you can find....

I prefer .270 win because the cartridge and the bullet are matched perfectly. .270 WSM needs approx 8 grains of powder to fly 100 fps faster than .270 win 130g bullet. Thats not a very big diff for the higher price you will probably pay for the wsm's. However, the .270 wsm is shooting a heaver bullet (150g) which may matter to some but the difference is only approx half of a .22lr bullet. I read this in a magazine. If I hadn't, I would not know this which proves that reading is valuable even if it came off of a google search.
