Interestingly enough Remington still chambers the new Model 7400's in .270 caliber but they no longer offer a .280....

That's actually a pretty shrewd move by Remington........................

Cuz they don't want to chamber a lousy gun with a good caliber, so they used the .270 instead

My hero SuperCub nice one
You guys can resort to humour if you have no arguments left
Howabout this... the new Remington CDL Classic... a very nice firearm I might add... is chambered in ... .243, .270, 7mm-08, 7mm Rem. Mag., 7mm Ultra Mag, .30-06, .300 Win. Mag., .300 Ultra Mag and .35 Whelen ...whats this no .280  ... how could this be :?: ... if the .280 is better than the .270 :?
The fact is that none of the New Design rifles made by the Big Three in 2005 or in recent history are chambered for .280 but they are all chambered for .270... I wonder why that is

"So does that mean the 6mm, 250, 260, 6.5X55, 308 etc,,,etc are all loser cartriges :?:
I think it has more to do with the "flavor of the month" cartridges :x
You gotta admit the 280 is more of a handloader cartridge & as such is less in demand, & we all know any manufacturer focuses on sales number not product quality

Anyway enough of this thread I will finally admit the 270
is NOT better than the 280

How the hell did you guys manage to streach this to 11 pages?

This ... THIS is the inevtiable result of the cancellation of hockey season.

"How the hell did you guys manage to streach this to 11 pages? "

Well that's an easy explanation :)
ONE of us won't admit the superiority of the 280

I DO concede that the .280 lags in sales behind the .270, (but not in superiority.)

Which goes to show another thing.......................

That the shooting public has no long term appetite for new or newer calibers. Which is exactly the reason why all the NEW WSMs will die in sales compared to the old .270 as well. :D

well Remington still chambers the m700 mtn rifle DM in 280 Rem, and they were to chamber it in the m700 CDL as well. Ruger makes a couple m77's...its a shame its not chambered in more rifles

Actually, a lot of .280 Remington-like cartridges were manufactured over the years , some of them preceeding the much-vaunted .270 Winchester , introduced in 1925 . The still popular 7 x 64 Brenneke, very close in dimension and performance to the .280 Rem., was introduced in Germany in 1917 . The .285 OKH , a cartridge based with the 7mm bullet on a 30-'06 capacity case was birthed, between the wars, by O'Neill, Elmer Keith and Don Hopkins .
The .280, standardized in 1957 , is reaching the half-century mark , after many years of being a wild-cat 7mm/06 .
