.270 vs .280

Which do you prefer?

I've had both in the past and i still have the .270 win. if that answers your question.All kidding aside i kept the .270 because she was my first rifle in remington model 721 made way back in Dec.1948. The .280 aka 7mm express was a good rifle and i really liked the performance of the .284 bore so i traded it in on a 7mm rem.mag for that little extra on elk/moose.Their both excellent rounds and to compare them is like picking gnat #### out of pepper.
 
I voted "no practical difference... for hunting". I own a .270 but I know I could do just as well with a .280... :?

Why? :shock:

Lets muddy these waters.... 8)

The 260 Remington and 7mm-08 Rem will do anything the 270 or 280 Rem will with less recoil and lighter, more compact guns.
 
I just don't get the .280 ... the 270 will shoot the same weight bullet faster and it will have greater S/D and B/C in bullet weights from 140 to 160 :? And if you want to shoot a 7mm Rem Mag or a .280 Ackley Improved to go faster.... Just look at the 270 WSM or the .270 Weatherby magnum. The longer thinner bullet from the .270 calibres win the Ballistics-Chart race most times... and kill the game 8)
 
If I lived in S. Ontario (again) and was a non-handloader, I would chose the .270 for deer hunting and something heavier for moose. The 280 offers the ''one gun'' owner a wee bit more flexability in bullet weights for a wider range of use.

Also, as a handloader, my 7mm bullets are usable in a wider variety of calibers than the .277s, which are used in only one or two calibers.

Al arguements aside they are essentually exact equals ( I can't believe I said that :roll: )

Only at the muzzle Senior... the 270 will have more velocity down range... thats where the hair splitting with the B/C and S/D comes into play.... which also means that the .270 bullet will penetrate bettter down range as well! :wink:
No I never have owned one... but I reload regularly for a pre-64 lightweight in .280 that I am rather fond of ... and it shot rings around my Browning .270 ... I did a lot of load development for Guys .280 Ackley (Ruger) pretty much equals the 7mm Mag and will shoot various bullet wieghts into the same hole 8) But the Tikka.270 WSM smokes them all for speed, energy and accuracy... :roll:
 
Just looked up ballistics in Horn #2 book

270 140gn spbt 3000fps 0 @ 200yds is 1171fps & --65 low @ 500yds

MY
280 139spbt 3100fps 0 @ 200yds is 1173fps & --62.5 low @ 500yds

I win :wink: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: As you can see the 280 has a HUGE advantage :lol:

I actually shoot 3125fps avg with those bullets in cold weather :roll:
 
How long did you have to look to find a load where the .280 won :wink:
I can list many many more where the SAME weight bullet is used and the .270 will be faster downrange.... and we both know that the .270 will shoot 140 grain bullets at 3200 fps in a heart beat. :oops: You can do better than that Senior :lol:
 
I own a .270 Win, a .270 Wby Mag, and a .280. I have owned a bunch of rifles chambered for .270 Win.

This little .280 of mine is a keeper. The rest are not.......... 8)

I have just started playing with the .280, have only tried a couple loads, and I have been very impressed with the accuracy. And I shot a deer this year with the .280 and a 130 gr Barnes X bullet, and that thing went down like it had been hit by the Hammer of Thor. It didn't even twitch. I was highly impressed.

Redd, I think you would have been a good infantry instructor at the Combat Arms School. That is where I learned to pick fly #### out of pepper whilst wearing boxing gloves. :roll:

The only reason I don't own a .280 Ackley is cuz they invented the .270WSSM...
Probably the best all around big game cartridge is the .280... that hurt to say... and I won't say it again :cry:
I would love to own a 7mmWSM and if I was living west of the 100th meridian I most certainly would 8)
 
I dont recall anyone ever trying a 270 here at our annual shoot but a budy from down south is pondering giving it a go, I am certain it will touch down out there but accuratly is the question , if we do try it I will be sure to let you all know the outcome :D

I have confidently shot and killed game at much farther distances with a .280 than I would have attempted to do with a .270 .
