Maybe if we renamed the .270 Win to 6.8mm Express Winchester? It would every bit as awesome as the 280 Rem.

I picked 270, even though you couldn't slip and eyelash through the differences between the two.

Craig Boddington Winner

.280 Remington....hands down!! Only 'cause I seen Craig Boddington drop an African deer type exotic animal, (that I'll never get a chance to do in this lifetime) with this ctg from his TC Pro-Hunter on N.A. Hunter.
But on a serious note, I actually wanted to get involved with this caliber/cartridge only cause, out of say 10 hunters I know shoot either, .270 (me too), 30-06, 7mm RM, .308 or 7mm STW. There's something mystical about this odd, less popular duckling thats says "shoot me" cause you need too!! I can buy a bbl. for my TC Endevour (Pro-Hunter's brother)...but it just deserves to be chambered on a Winchester model 70 chassis.......my closest is a 7 WSM Super Black Shadow.........
Maybe if a Win M70 ever pops up on the EE I might bite.
Good thread BIGREDD :)

Huntsman

So I've been testing RL26 with my wife's .270 Win and I have to tell you the results are satisfying. With 60.5gr of RL26 it sends 150gr Partitions out at 2970fps. That load is still below book maximum, so realistically I am going to see +3000 fps with those bullets.

Clearly has the .280 beat. :)

Oh hey, Huntsman, there is one in EE now!

Those really were the good olde days on CGN.

Different times eh? What ever happened to BigRedd? Casull is gone too - miss all of his big bore stuff. Remember the thread where he posted about the Bison he shot with his Ruger No.1 in .50-110?

Well lets cause some #### in the oldest running thread on CGN lol.
So what are the differences...
.277 vs .284 bullet diameter, minimal almost meaningless, marginally higher sectional density with 270 vs 280 with same bullet weights, so call that even.
Pressures....270 is a 65k psi cartridge, 280 is a 60k psi cartridge. Again, very little real world difference which equals almost identical velocity with same bullet weights, but advantage to the 270.
Twist rates....270 is usually 1/10 while 280 is 1/9.25. So that's pretty much the biggest difference....the 280 will be able to handle slightly longer bullets then the 270, whether that's lighter solids, or heavier lead spitzer, advantage goes to the 280.

BUT what really determines which one is THE BEST EVER GOAT.... popularity.
270 wins that one hands down.

Given the choice between a 270 or 280? I'd pick a 7mm Remington Mag....
