Having a rifle that does not like heavy bullets does not mean that the twist rate is the problem. My 308 I shoot 220 grain Hornady's out of has the 1:12 twist, and it shoots 1.5MOA with those bullets. That same gun shoots rather poorly with 150/165 grain fodder. On the other hand, I have a Savage that likes 150 grain bullets fairly well, but does not shoot very well at all with heavier bullets, and it has a 1:10 twist barrel.

Something I've noticed from my trials and tribulations with the 300WM is that the hotter the cartridge, the hotter the skinny barrel and the more hassles and concerns you have with cooling between shots at the range. Its got me realizing some of the drawbacks of using more muzzle energy than you need for the application.
Fair enough. I never said it was a rate of twist problem, however I did mention "stabilization", so I can see if my comment was misleading.
Some .308's won't shoot heavier bullets accurately. Where do I get this from? The target range. Perhaps all of your research on rate of twist is correct, and it is another problem like barrel harmonics, but at the end of the day when your .308 groups go from 165 grn. bullets at 1 moa to 180 grn bullets at 6 moa, you have a rifle which you shouldn't be hunting with unless you stick to lighter bullets.
Sorry for the thread jacking, but IF you have a .308 which you can push heavier rounds from and maintain accuracy, that would be my choice.

Which ever gun suits you best, if I had to choose one it would be the 308 because the bigger cal will be slightly less dependent on bullet performance!

I think a 7-08, with new premium bullets, and knowing ranges, will do all the .308/270/30-06 will do.

Nice choice, let us know how it shoots.
With everyone squabbling over the virtues of the .308 compared to the .270/7mm/08./30.06 etc. as a good long range gun, makes me wonder why on earth the military would have ever chosen the .308 as their choice for a sniper round.
Because they already had the .308, to use in thier machine guns, and knew it well. it was not a heavy recoiler, had 30-06 capabilities, and shot pretty good, just like lots of other cartridges out there.
It was/is expediency. There are far better "sniper" rounds out there, and they existed at the time, too...
Not to mention it was a NATO round that was recognized and fell within the rules of the Geneva Convention.
Personally, I tried 30-06, .300WM and always held a certain devotion to the
.270 just from what I've heard from family members experience and other renowned hunters abroad. It was actually on my list of rifles to buy but after doing more research in the .308 Win, to me it was an even toss up. Since I had a .308 (Win 88) allready..........I ended up buying another .308 in the form of a TC Encore bbl. I myself will probably never own a .270 but will always lend an ear to hear the stories of others who have one.
And if I were to buy a .270 then my other rifles would get less usage.

I have one in .223 and it's highly accurate. Regardless of the unwarranted criticism of the "plastic" parts the gun is pretty decent quality. The .308 is an inherently accurate cartridge so I expect you should be able to get groups under 1/2 inch at 100 yards.
That was my decision in 1972 lol. The notion was less bullet deflection and more hitting power for moose (I was only a kid. The 30-06 served me well.

Can you inform me whether a 300 win mag semi would rock the shooter? I have ablue shoulder from the bolt as it is. Although, one shouldnt be shooting a 300 win mag at gophers.
oh, yea, she rocks- all of the 'big" boys do-try about double the '06- maybe about 1.75 in the semi- as far as i know there's only one semi magnum out there- the bar, and my 338 will smarten you right up with 1 round if you're half asleep- even with the factory installed recoil pad and the muzzle brake
