Question .....

All else being equal, which would be the more accurate round, 270Win or 7/08?

the 7-08 obviously...why,..because I have a 7-08 and I'm selling a 270.....there has to be a reaon.

seriously,..I don't think the accuracy difference of one over the other would be in the cartridge...I think the accuracy is about 95% in the barrel

most of the accuracy of a particular combination can be found in the quality of the barrel...about a year ago a CGN'er brought me a used BR barrel, either a Shilen or a Hart, can't remember. It was chambered in 6PPC...he also brought me a new 700 LTR in 308...we took the barrel off the LTR, rethreaded and rechambered to BR barrel to a standard 243 Win chamber and put the two together...no truing of the action, didn't even true the front face, didn't even adjust the trigger...I don't know what stock he screwed it into but it shot factory Ballistic Tip ammo in a half inch....handloads less than that....

Actually it's a serious question, but I can see how it would be perceived otherwise. ;)

The difference is likey persuant upon the skill of the person assembling the components, ie. the gun smith's skill, and or quality of say the reamer, and or the barrel.

I'd wager if all else being equal, even the most skilled shooter would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Now comes the opportunity for all the experts to expound the virtues of long vs. short actions, this bore size vs. that, and bore expansion ratios.

Does it really matter in the supposed context of where 99.44% of us will ever go with it.

Nope.

everything else being even, my vote goes for the 7mm/08, for the shorter case and the short action.I don't believe that one could tell however, unless they were using a custom match barrel, trued with lugs lapped, jewel trigger, match (tight) chamber, turned case necks, etc. In a hunting rifle, one couldn't tell the diff....all things being equal...IMHO

Agree 100 %

Has more to do with the platform than the cartridge...All cartridges could be considerably accurate if you build them in the right rifle...

my 7-08 will do 1moa or a bit less, the last 270 I shot I managed a 2.5" 3 shot @ 460 yards, and two shots at 600 yards landed 4" apart. Both should do the trick. If I was building a competition rifle I would bypass both for a 6.5-08

My 7mm-08 outshoots my .270 hands down...and if i'm not mistaken the 7mm-08 has more energy downrange than the .270....love the 7mm-08...very lethal...and very very accurate..

Well I have here a 700LA and a Model Seven for platforms.

IMO, its all subjective. You could say "which is more accurate shooting factory federal ammo with accubonds, and then you would have a comparison.

Nobody can really say which is more accurate until they have exhausted the load development for both. You might find a cloverleaf load with the first bullet in one, but then go through 6 different bullets in the other to find the accurate load.

I still think they could be equally accurate, just go with the rifle you like, regardless of cartridge...

I think is an inappropriate question. You are asking the wrong things. Accuracy, not terminal ballistics, has nothing to with the cartridge. It has everything to do with the quality and consistency of the components, the consistency of the assembly, the quality of the barrel and chamber. Most importantly it is how all the above fit together in the package your shooting.

What makes you think a 270, or any other cartridge running comparable equipment can't be as accurate as any other?

Would you ask which completely customized car would be faster? An audi or a porsche? No, because either one could become faster once you play with the internals.

If you are asking which cartridge is more accurate in stock config, then again you must not be clear on what makes accuracy. Read a good book on reloading. Accuracy about consistency and quality, not the cartridge.

For handloading, you are going to find a better selection of bullets for the 7mm, so the potential of finding a more accurate load might be greater.

Other than that, potential of each is similar, 95% dependant on equipment, as in above posts by ben hunchak, and drvrage.

Yep, you are mistaken. The 270 trounces the 7mm-08 at all ranges and actually gets better at longer ranges.

Federal has a neat little calculator for their ammo you download and install. It graphs velocity/energy/drop/wind, etc, plus lists their BC's.

http://www.federalpremium.com/resources/ballistics_application.aspx

It is actually sort of handy to do "what ifs" because Federal uses bullets from a wide range of manufacturers and you can graph 6 at a time. It's not a reloaders tool but good enough to easily compare a bunch of cartridges and prove who has the biggest d**k.
