270 vs 7-08

Twenty to thirty rounds to sight in?Even starting with just a bore sighted scope,it is very rare for me to use more than ten rounds to do a sight in.The normal is one shot and then a rough adjustment, three shots, then a fine adjustment, then three shots if a second fine adjustment is required, then three shots to confirm the zero.

How many tags do you have?Twenty shots is enough to use three shots each for five deer, and still have five shots left to shoot coyotes if it is legal where you hunt.

If you aren't confident that you can fill your tags with twenty shots, you need a lot more shooting practice.

Notign to add to that....

Re read gents, you're not listening

We can read your words just fine. The only logical conclusions that we can draw from your post, is that you aren't very efficient at sighting in your rifle if it takes you twenty to thirty shots, and that you miss most of your shots on game if twenty shots won't get you through a hunt.
In any case you do have options,to ensure that you never run out of ammunition. You can get some pointers on sighting in your gun ,so fewer rounds are required. You can spend more time practicing your shooting,so you miss fewer shots on game.Or if will help you to overcome your paranoia of running out of ammunition on a hunt, you can simply take 100 rounds on your hunt instead of 50.
In any case,a little planning makes ammunition availability in remote locations a non issue.

Thanks stubblejumper,
I really am a lousy shot at them running deer.

They are the only shots we have out west, as we walk all day, kicking up deer and they are always on the run and quite difficult to shoot off hand.

Now you know why 20 rounds wont see you through the week and can make you nervous when you've only got one or two bullets left and a big bruiser runs out in front of you at 200 yds and gaining on 300 real fast.:)

Now I really do understand. You make a habit out of taking shots at deer that your yourself know that you are likely to miss.I can't help but wonder how many deer you wound.

I love this forum

I am sure that you were thinking the same thing that I just posted.

Good one,
nothing escapes as we own or have permission for every square mile we hunt on.

I have permission for the land that I hunt as well, but since it isn't surrounded with a high game proof fence, game can escape.

And even if you do manage to find all of the carcasses, how long do the wounded deer suffer waiting for you to find then and put them out of their misery?

A great excuse to reload!

The city that I live in has no gun shops, and the closest one is small, and is a 3 hour drive. It is another hour to get to a better selection. Most people that don't reload, buy a selection of loads for testing when they buy their gun. When they find out what it likes, they buy in volume so they never run out.Plan properly, and you never run out.

We do have Canadian tire and Wal mart though, but both are often out of even the most common chamberings including the 270wim.Then again,I have seen 25-06 and 7mm-08 on the shelves at times.

Yes exactly why I reload and is why 99% of everbody else that does not, shoots a .270, 30-06 or .308 here in South western Sask.

Im sitting in the States right now and can't believe the selection they have at everyshop, gas bar even hotels....unbelieveable. Too bad we're so bass ackwards:runaway:

Cheers!!

I don't care If you are a sniper or you need a crate of ammo to kill a buck at 10 yards... I hunt with a .35 Rem. that can be hard to find and I plan ahead when going hunting. Buy two boxes of ammo and make a check list. You'll never come short.;)

Now, lets get back to the topic at hand people. My vote goes for the 7mm08. It has less recoil, fits in a short action rifle and will do anything that a 270 win. can do. Case closed.

Man is everybodys good on the net, I must be the only fellow that misses or needs a follow up shot. Congrats to you snipers , good clean one shot kills...awsome job fellows!! HIGH FIVE!!

....................hardly a sniper. Every tag has been filled with a shot at under 100 yards in the last 5 years. I hardly need to be of Robert Furlong's skill for that. Maybe u do though Scott R. I see you are from Sask. My wife is from Kindersley. I thank the lord every day i don't have to hunt in that god forsaken wasteland where the deer can see and smell you coming from the neighbouring quarter section. I would think you are the one that needs to be the sniper if thats the sort of country you get to hunt.:D

Yeah that area is really boring, Ive taken some real nice mulies in the South Sask River Valley just south of Kindersley. It would appear barren but you would be surprised at the critters that you see while huntin.

Cheers!!
