270 wby mag

Don't judge a cartridge by whether or not they stock ammunition at Canadian tire. The 270wby has impressive ballistics but it isn't that popular with the 7mmremmag offering similar ballistics with a much larger selection of factory loads at much lower prices, and the fact that almost every company chambers it.As far as being the ultimate long range deer/sheep gun,the 7mmstw offers even better ballistics,as does the 7mmultramag.

No doubt, Canadian Tire has the worst selection of ammo around :( If you need to buy ammo perhaps look at the 7mm mag like stubblejumper suggested or take a look at the .270 wsm.

Cheers!!

Used to own one in a Weatherby Vanguard. I regretted selling it until I recently bought a SS Vanguard in .257 Wby :D
It is a nice cartridge and is very accurate. Mine liked 130gr Ballistic Tips with RL22. Got 3350fps from the 24" barrel.

I use the 270 weatherby for everything from gophers to moose. It works great. You don't have to send a second one on target to get results. Very accurate and flat shooting. My accumark is #5 in the 270 weatherby. 140 grain bullets over a stout charge of reloader 22 work great. Canadian tire isn't going to stock ammo that runs $80.00 a box, so they aren't the best place to go to pick a very useful cartridge. My ruger #1 fired the 140 grainers at 3400 fps with a charge of 7828 behind them with outstanding accuracy. If you buy one, you will not be dissapointed with it's performance.

Certainly not my cup of tea but I know a guy who has shot a bull moose every year for I don't know how long with a beat up Weatherby Mark 5 (German) in 270 Wby. Mag. and 150 gr. nosler Partitions. usually the front of the bullet would disappear on contact and the rear portion would offer complete penetration, anyway he never lost a moose that I know of, of course it helps that he was born in the bush and was a good shot.

My old 270 Wby was built on a Mauser 98 with a twenty four inch Douglas premium barrel more than thirty years ago.

It has around 700 rounds through the barrel and drives 130 gr Partitions, Interlocks and X bullet at just over 3500 fps. That's thirty-five hundred, and it still puts them into an inch at 100 yds.

Last time I shot it at the turkey rail, it put a magazine full, three, into about five inches at 385 meters, 411 yds! ..........the center of that group was a bit less than seven inches low with the rifle sighted three inches high at 100 yd. That, my friends is flat!

It is absolutely devastating on game.

I find it interesting that the 270 weatherby is quick to be slagged. Things like 'can't do anything a 7 mag can do.. they rely on the 26" barrel for performance - otherwise useless.. etc.'

I've got one on a Husqvarna commercial FN action with a 22 1/2" barrel. That's right a wee little 22.5" barrel. I found some old factory wby 130gr ammo marked way down in a shop and bought a couple of boxes. My rifle makes 3360 ft/s with this stuff and prints nice little cloverleafs at 100 when I do my part. Once I finish shooting that stuff up I'll have enough brass to get reloading for it which should be real interesting........
