270 Win. At short distances.

Shot most of my deer with a .270 bought both my sons .270 switched up to a 280AI 5 years ago ,do not know why ???

Since google search and browsing through all “270” threads yielded no answers I’m wondering if anyone has any experience shooting 270 Win at very short distances. I hunt in heavy brush and most of my game goes down at 25-60 yard distance. Is 270 win a cartridge to consider or is it completely out of question due to its high velocity. I’m thinking about meat damage and possibly shooting through the animal and wounding it.

I shoot a 130 grain accubond at 3,312 fps out of my 270 Winchester. Closest I shot a big game animal was at 75 yards: meat damage was minimal.

This is where the 30-30 comes into play.
Everyone knows a 30-30 is needed in every gun locker/safe to be taken out for a walk on such occasions .

Not much available in a cheap 30-30 these days though, unless you're willing to go with the Chiappa Big Badger... If OP is weary about spending money then a cheap bolt action is much easier to find. And if he's shooting factory ammo I would expect 270win to be cheaper although I don't buy factory ammo much so I could be mistaken there.

What Wonksy said, and if you can't find Remington 150 gr RNCL, try the Federal Blue Box 150 grainers. They will both definitely put deer down, but won't ruin a lot of meat.

Good old 30-30 Savage 340. And that’s my first deer last season.

I always forget about the 340. Those can actually be had for pretty darn cheap if you wanted to keep using 30-30.

A 270win is still a worthy addition IMO though.

Don't forget Savage 99s, chambered for the 30-30, very strong, and bullet shape isn't an issue.

They don't seem to get much love. I picked one up in Chilliwack this spring, cheap. No one wanted it. It was a "take down" model, and needed a bit of work.

Before I started the work, I took it out to the range with a box of old yellow box WW Winchester 170 grain ammo.

Recoil is impressive but it shot into 3 inches at 100yds from the bench, with its original iron sights.

When it's all finished, getting cleaned up and fitted for a new fore end, I'm going to work up a better load. I'm also thinking of making up another barrel, maybe a nice 25-35?

I found 340 to fit me perfectly but I saw a few at a high price and in all bad shape , otherwise I’d just buy another one.

Savage 99 is sweet but on the gun shows in southern Ontario 30-30 goes as high as 1500$ and it’s just not worth buying if you are planning to hunt with it, again they look well used to say the least.

I wanted it. Lol

I had a specific type of gun I was after though, and that didn't fit the criteria. Should have just bought it anyways, but it sounds like it went to a good home...

Otherwise it seems the 30-30 ones are less common and more expensive. You can get a 300sav 99 for like $600, but the 30-30s I've seen are always asking for significantly more.

If the 7mm Backcountry takes off and proves itself, manufactures (Rifle/Ammunition) will possibly produce such in all cartridges. The 277 Fury has raised my eyebrows a few times, but what bolt action will take the pressures?
