Hey guys,
Looking at loading up some rounds for a BAR 270 Winchester and I want to know what guys normally use on deer. Shots would vary from 25yrds-100yards.

Let me know!

While not my cup of tea, my Father shot an awful lot of big Whitetails with the 270 Win. and a 130 grain pointed bullet at ranges from up close to 500 yds or so. Nobody had even heard of the Boone and Crockett records then, but I don't remember him wounding any deer, no trick bullets, just knowing your game and knowing your gun, it worked in the 1940s so it should work now !

130 grain is the "standard" deer bullet in the .270, 150 grain bullets are favoured by those hunting both deer and bigger game like elk or moose. No reason to use heavier than 130 grain on deer, unless you want to minimize meat loss at the close range you mentioned. 150 grain bullets tend not to "shatter" quite so much, and the added drop in trajectory is no consequence at 25-100 yds.

Any old cup and core 130 grain bullet from a 270 will kill deer. You don't need Noslers, or other "premium" (priced) bullets. You just need a bullet/load that shoots accurately in your rifle.

I use 130 Hornady SST's and have been very happy with the combination.

I tried 140 accubonds, and got complete penetration (pass through) on three animals. So if elk and moose are on the menu, they are a good bullet. But a few places I hunt, I want the bullet not to continue into the next county and have found SST's to fit the bill.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but does anyone have experience with Nosler 140 grain "Trophy Grade" Ballistic Tips in the .270 Win. on big game (deer and bigger)?

I've some that are a few years old but I'm not sure how they'll perform on game. Several years ago a friend reported that he had the same style of bullet (it was a 150 gr .308 Ballistic Tip shot out of a 30-06) cause a nasty shallow wound after blowing up in a deer's shoulder (He's since moved on to Triple Shocks and bonded bullets for big game).

I've heard that they've thickened up the jackets on the newer Ballistic Tips to improve performance on game. Is this true or are the ballistic tips better left to target use?

When I hunted with a .270, I just used winchester 150gr power points and they hammered about 6 deer between 30 and 110 yards. Most were dead drops and pass throughs but one was quartering away at about 100 yards and it went in back a bit, clipping a 1" hole in the stomach, going through all the important stuff, comeing out and breaking the opposite side knee and stopping in the hide, looking like an advertisement.

Winchester white box 150gr powerpoint is my favorite until I get another deer with that rifle with a handload. Gotta admit though, I really want one with my marlin 45-70 next, seeing as I broke in the 6.5x55 tikka last weekend with a nice mulie.

.270

My son shot a nice mulie buck at 219m and a good bear with 140 gr TSX this year. Both were complete thru and thru..good exit hole, lots of blood, both critters fell to the shot. And, they were shooting 1 1/2" at 200m off the bench in his Tikka 695. I was impressed

federal 130 grain from ct should do. hits hard enough to break bones in and out. shoots nice and flat. should have no problem with them. at your ranges, you could use any bullet though.

130 grain TSX's have worked like a charm for me in the .270 Win on African plains game game (upwards of 400 lbs) as well as on smaller varmints, giving explosive performance on jackals and coyotes.

I doubt that they can be beat for penetration and dramatic kills. Their only down-side is they're an expensive bullet and pricey to "play" with (i.e. to develop loads and shoot for fun). Of course, a buck a bullet is dirt cheap compared to the cost of a hunt.

I use 140gr Accubonds in my 270WSM's and highly recommend them. Great bullet...good for deer, elk, moose, bears.

Next would be 130-140gr TTSX's

The BST's in larger calibers are suppose to be thicker walled...I leave the BST's for my predator rifles 243, 22-250 ...but thats me.

I use 140 boat tails (buddy loads for me)....one shot one deer. Never had to chase. Shot placement the key all within 80 yards.
