I have just purchased a 270 and will be starting off with some 130 ttsx and was planning on trying h4831 as I have a fair amount of it and it seems to be a popular powder with this cartridge, some say it is like bread and butter. I called barnes and they gave me a max load of 60 gr @ just over 3000 fps (which sounds a bit sluggish to me but then again I haven't loaded for a 270 yet, maybe that's normal?), knowing that a little bit lower velocity is no big deal I made the mistake of buying a chronograph a couple of years ago so now I find myself chasing both accuracy and velocity. Has anyone put this load over a chronograph? Has anyone chronographed this bullet with other powders that showed exceptional accuracy and velocity?

Second question, I was planning on using these bullets on Island blacktail deer which are not that big a deer, knowing what barnes bullets are capable of does anyone think 130 gr is too much, will they possibly zip through too easily? Would I be better off with a 110 ttsx?

Last question, I just scooped a bunch of 270 CIL Imperial brass at the range. Ive never seen this stuff before and cannot find much info about it, except that it is older. Has anyone used this stuff, it it any good? I have other brass so I'm not dying to use it, just curious.

thanks for any feedback

The 270 with 130 grain bullets and H4831 is a classic load, and usually performs well.
I have 'graphed a lot of 130 and H4831, and velocity varies, depending on firearm, powder lot number and barrel length.
Usually between 2975 and 3100 fps.

You probably do not need the 130 TTSX for those island deer, so the 110 is arguably plenty,
This should get you into the 3200+ fps area, which will be quite flat shooting.

The CIL "Imperial" brass may be quite good, if it is early production.
Any CIL brass with "Dominion" on the headstamp is great stuff.
If it is headstamped "Imperial" and is late production IVI commercial brass....not so much.

The clue is the "web" section of the case. If it is relatively short, then it is good.
If the web is longer [reducing case capacity] then it is the newer brass, and, in my experience, not as good quality.

Hope this helps a bit. Eagleye.

Thanks Eagleye, I had a feeling I'd be hearing from you on this one. Is there any one powder for the 270 that really shined above the rest?
The brass is stamped "Imperial", guess I'll throw it in the back of the cabinet and get to it whenever.

A short while back, I was thinking, one of the more popular calibers that I've never had is the .270 Win. I thought I'd best correct that deficiency while my hunting shooting years still enable me to do so. I purchased a nice Husqvarna from Why not? and a little while later, I picked up a Sako that a good friend is nolonger able to make use of. Went from years of not having one, to now having two.

At the time, I was in the process of changing over to Barnes bullets in a few calibers I have and I've settled on the 130gr TTSX for the .270, pushed with IMR 4831. What makes this bag of brass 'interesting' is that the plastic bag itself is marked GRC RCMP.

I've used C.I.L. and/or Dominion in other calibers over the years and found it as good as any. I've accumulated a decent supply of brass for the .270 but at a fairly recent gun show/swap meet at the Cowichan club, I picked up a bag of 80 new Winchester brass.

Don't know if you're a member of the Naniamo club but when I was hot & heavy into bullseye pistol shooting, it was one of the two clubs I had membership in.

I have not used the 130 TTSX in 270 Win on WT but I have used the 110TTSX. Really works well. Fast, light recoil, Bang/flop. I use IMR4350 and Mag primers.

NICE rifles JP, I'll have to keep an eye out for those at the Nanaimo club...maybe I'll get to shoot them.

I was a member there when I was into the more formal bullseye handgun shooting but I'm not now. Actually, the last time I was at the club was for the last gun show, some of which was held downstairs in the old indoor handgun range. Doesn't appear that it's used much anymore. There is another show there Febuary 19th, perhaps I'll see you there.

Dunk, did those 110ttsx pass through? I think that's what I'm most curious about regarding those bullets. And how was the accuracy?
thanks
I have been a handloader for over 50 years, perhaps it is more accurate to say I have had a press for 50 years and have been a reloader.Anyway, all I can say is I am very happy with the the accuracy and there was pass through even with some bone.

With the 130 grain bullet, H4831 is hard to beat. However, IMR4831 and Norma MRP are also very good, in my experience.
When I moved up to the 140 Accubond, one loading has excelled in 3 rifles. 60 grains of Vihtavuori N165.
Your "Imperial" brass is probably just fine, unless it was produced just shortly before IVI ceasing offering factory ammo.
Regards, Eagleye.
