Is it worth the difference in price and a lack of selection of weight in you bullet to have a bit more punch with the .270wsm over the .270win?
I've been looking and I could only find 130g - 150g in .270wsm and .270win you can get from 100g to 150g.

Is there a benifit for the .270wsm??

Keep in mind I am thinking of something for Moose on down!

Out of all the WSM's and Saum's and WSSM's too come out lately the 270wsm is the only one that would remotely interest me. However the .270Win. is so good in it's own right ,why bother. Who ever fell into the wsm hype, make sure you stockpile your brass.

Why not try something new? I fell for the WSM hype, .270 to be exact. I'm glad I did, that's what makes shooting fun...isn't it? :)

I'm not in the least worried about brass. With every manufacturer chambering the .300wsm and the .270wsm and making brass for them, they're not going anywhere. Now the SAUM is a different story. Nobody is chambering it, and only Remington making brass.

I have never heard of a .270 win do much if anything at benchrest or F class shooting, all though it has a fine reputation as a hunting gun, the
270wsm is a very good cartridge, for me you should be looking at the 7mm wsm this cartridge holds the British record at 900 meters just under 3" and watch for the results fot the 7mm wsm this year in Fclass as many shooters are going to the 7mmwsm

If cost of ammo's an issue, don't get one. As for ammo selection... a WSM's better if you handload, for sure, but around here, you can get a good range of hunting bullets - pretty close to standard .270 selection, really. I've never seen 100-120 gn factory loads for a normal .270 -- and between the Fusions, ballistic tips (not that good a choice in wsms IMO), the triple shocks, accubonds, bear claws and the power points that they load for the wsm, it's not too tricky to find something that'll serve for any kind of hunting.

I don't know if it'd be worth it for you, but I like mine just fine. Flat shooting and a speedy bolt throw and a tiny bit more oomph gives the short mag .270 a neat little edge over what was already a great cartridge.

But if price is an issue, like I said, don't do it. It sucks paying half again as much for a box of ammo, and having a gun lying around that you can't afford to shoot. In my case though, I got reloading stuff and can now afford to shoot a whole lot.
But then I might just be a victim of hype.

Ban hype, I say!

Manitou210, the reason I am looking at the .270 is because that is as big as I can hunt with south of barrie. If I could get away with a 7mm i might think about it a little more. The .270 seems to be the all around caliber for ontario.

I have been reading up on the ballistics on the wsm over the win and it does sound like it shoots just a little harder and straighter. Sounds like a not bad choice.

Just might have to buy into the hype myself

I bought a 270 WSM a few years ago and I really like it. If I already had a 270 Win. I wouldn't bother, but the WSM will give about 150 - 200 fps or so more. There are a lot of similar rounds available, but the 270 WSM does have advantages over the original 270.

I have been using a .270 cal of some description for almost 35 years. It has been my go to caliber for everything from Jack Rabbits to Moose and it is truly an all around cartridge.
That said I tried a .270WSM as soon as they were introduced and I could get my hands on one. I bought a Tikka T-3 in .270WSM shortly thereafter and never looked back.
The Short Mag is faster and flatter and will add well over 100 yards to your effective kiling range on big game, considerably more on varmints. It has no more recoil than a standard .270 in rifles of the same weight and in many cases less recoil!
Many rifles chambered for the short Mag are shorter lighter and faster to cycle because of the shorter action. And they will invariably need less barrel length to develop their advertised speeds!
The availability of ammo and selection is a non-issue... there is a ton of it out there and in any configuration you might need. Cost factor is another fallacy... premium bullets are priced very close to premium bullets in standard calibers.
There are nothing BUT advantages for the Short Mag over the .270.... there is no valid argument at all.

I'm getting on in years, and in those years I have found that there is more to life than arguing.

I'm changing to a kinder, gentler, internet personality, besides, arguing with someone who is right all the time is useless. :D

I'm serious :dancingbanana: :)

You got one thing right... I am right.:p
Kinder gentler internet personality...... that is just boring.
And copying my sign off... could be construed as a sign of limited imagination on your part. But hey if it gets you some points on the leaderboard... why not.
Now that you have succeeded in another hijack... how about gettin back on the thread topic with some of your extensive first hand knowledge and experience with the .270WSM Super?
Damn I forgot... you got nuthin.
I really am serious... not a pretender.
