.270 WIN or .308

What would you guys say is a better round for whitetail hunting around 50-100 yards. Currently using .270 but havent been impressed the last 2 years

If there's an issue with your 270, it's either your choice of ammo, or your shooting? A 308 won't cure either.

Shot placement is the key.

When you recovered your deer, where had they been hit?

Bullet construction is also super-important.

Your bullet is probably the cheapest element of your hunt, but a lightly constructed bullet, together with a marginal hit (like a gut shot, blow off a leg or a jaw), is likely to end up poorly for the deer and not terribly satisfying for the hunter.

My best experiences with the .270 Win. on big game has been with mono-metal and bonded partition bullets (Barnes TSX and Swift A-Frame type bullets).

Shot placement, however, is the key.

There are many kinds of "wounded". There is only one kind of "dead".

(Take away: go to the range and practice shooting off shooting sticks, kneeling, sitting, and so on, until you can keep all your shots inside a paper plate. That determines the range at which you can competently shoot at game).

Google "shot placement on deer". Get familiar with where you want to place your rounds. And take your time!

Good luck.

No need for me to add anything to this thread. My opinion has already been brought up by others. Both calibers should do the trick. You need to explore other factors.

Your problem is that your probably using a higher end bonded bullet, NAB, or a NPT, or TBBC, or something of that flavor. I know what you are talking about, I filmed a buddies white tail hunt last year with the similar results. He shot a WT with a 7RM from 255 yds and it penciled both lungs, perfect shot placement. The deer stood around, walked, and finally laid down 2 minutes later to expire. I am sure this animal could have covered a couple hundred yds in this condition.

when we cleaned the animal both lungs had been hit with holes the size of nickles in both. He was using TBBC.

I would say keep your rifle, but buy softer bullets, pick up some fed blue box 150's or some Win Super X, they will die nearly instantly I promise.

Harder premium bullets don't open up well on soft light game, they are meant to hit moose and elk shoulders.

PM me if you want the video.

Mike.
