Both calibers (together with a ton more) are perfect for the task of taking whitetails from 50-100 yards. What ever isn't impressing you isn't the caliber. My worthless internet opinion is that you stick with the .270 and figure out the cause of whatever non-caliber issues you are having and go from there to learn and get better.

308 for more components choice especially if you are reloading. Choose the right bullet and you’ll be in business. If you are still confused just go get a 338 Lapua, you’ll be able to kill a moose more than a km away.

Not sure why .270 is not working for you on deer within 100yrds, unless your shooting FMJ.
If .270 doesn't make your cut then .308 isn't going to.
Will need more information to make a recommendation.

Try a Federal Powershock 130 grain soft point. Probably one of the least expensive box of ammo on the shelf, very consistent, and excellent game dropping performance. They will kill whitetails way past 200.

Both calibers are over-kill for deer.

If you are unimpressed with 270:
-It is not sighted in,or
-You are a poor shot, or
-You get buck-fever, or
-You are using a very poor bullet, or
-A combination of the above.

Based on my field experience, you are probably shooting unsupported at a distance too far for your shooting ability.

Both calibers are more than capable and fine for what your doing, as others have said we need a little more info on why your not impressed ? bullet performance ? the deer didn't drop in its track ? shot placement ?

Brand, Type and weight of bullet used ?

Another one of these weird posts. I see in other forums you are looking for a moose rifle and also recommending the 270 as your preferred caliber.
Is it just me?

What exactly is your criteria to become impressed ? :)

at 50 yards you should do it with any caliber. Are you trying to kill it by throwing the rifle at it ? ;)

I'd like to know what the OP didn't like. One guy might be upset about following something too far, and the next complaining about meat loss.

The first could be handled by center punching the shoulder with a Ballistic-tip while the second is best handled by missing it.

I just purchased a Rem 700 mountain rifle lss in 270. I did plenty of research prior to. I wanted a 270 over any other caliber. Why? It is known as the only caliber produced specifically designed for hunting big game, ammo is widely available most anywhere, and ballistics are good to very good depending on game and bullet selection. I hunt whitetails and moose at this point, perhaps elk if I ever win the lotto... for whitetails, my bullet selection is Federal Fusions in 130 grain. 150 grain Nosler Partitions for the bigger animals. Experienced hunters with this caliber prefer the 130 and 150 grain Partitions for just about everything. At 50 to 300 yards, one has no advantage over the other in practical terms. Similar recoil and accuracy in typical hunting rifles. Without more details, it's hard to recommend one over the other. Re-diagnose the issue and find the most logical way to correct it, be it bullet selection, rifle design, etc. All I can offer at this point. Good luck.
