270 Win or 7mm/08?

I know the 270 is a necked down 30/06 and the 7mm/08 is a necked down 308. Do the same comparisons apply to these two? ie: less powder in the 7mm/08, possibly less recoil too? I guess the 7mm/08 could be built into a shorter action than the 270. But what are the differences in performance between the two? And why would one be a better choice over the other?

Intended use: everthing from paper punching to deer/black bear and moose.
 
7-08 , a hammer @ 500 meters. can load up or down with great results , and wind will have less effect than the smaller diameter, and weight bullet of the 270.Now change the 270 into a 280 , and its got the goods.
Could do this all day with different cals, but of those mentioned, the 7 mil is choice. And savings in rifle weight/length, ammo cost , less powder..but not much less, savings are more in the short action, and ballistics.
 
Recoil would probably be less with the 7mm08 but that would depend on what weight of bullet you had in mind for each and the weight of each rifle. You could use either for your intended purposes but I would say that the 270 would give you more fps if you wanted to load up heavier loads for say moose. The 270 with 140 grain accubonds will give you plenty of reach and take almost all game cleanly. There is only .007 inch difference in diameter between the two but I dont think that the case capacity of the 7/08 would let you take full advandtage of the heavier, high ballistic ceoficcients bullets available for the 7mm.
 
between the two I would go with the 270. It's tough to beat a 130gr @ 3100 fps, shoots flat and with not much more recoil than the 7-08. If I was going for a more compact rifle the 7-08 would get the nod, but I'd rather get a 260 or 308 than a 7-08...........
 
.270 is going to have a slight power advantage and slighter better BC's with most similar bullet weights. But it's going to need a longer action and a little more powder. They're both going to do the exact same job in the field, basically identically.
 
Boy, 2 years ago I would have said 7mm-08 without any hesitation, but I am not so sure anymore.

I have owned, loaded and shot a few in each caliber and I would now have to say I am leaning slightly to the 270.

Like said previously if you are looking for a nice light short (20") barrelled gun then the 7mm-08 for sure, but if you are looking at something with a 22"+ barrel I think the 270 is the winner.
 
7-08 is chambered by some manufacturers in shorter action than the 270 giving a slightly more compact rifle and slight weight reduction. Both are fine jumper dumpers and on up.

Good point on the 20" LW rifle, but why not a full sized 7mm/08? Nothing gained or lost either way.

Are you assuming a drastic difference in bullet weights? A 150gr 270 bullet will buck wind better than a 150gr 284 bullet.
 
I have both...and love the 7mm-08...i'll carry it over my .270 anyday. Why carry a .270 anyways when one could have a .280 or a .30-06.
