270 Win or 7mm/08?

The only practical difference is in the action length and a bit of weight.
I like the 270, but only because of my personal experience with it.

If you are not a reloader than hands down the 270 is the way to go. Ammo is cheaper and far more readily available in 270.

Both are great!! do you want a short action (7mm-08)or long action(270) they will both kill game the same, ammo is easier to find for the 270(Canadian Tire,Walmart) if you dont reload but there is alot of good factory ammo for both, but if you do reload then it dosnt matter!!!! My vote is 7mm-08 i just love the cartridge!!!
using that logic, why use a 30-06 when you can use a 338-06?
actually if you look at the wide range of bullets available in both calibers, you'll see that just about all .277" bullets from 90 to 160 grains are designed to be shot out of a 270 Winchester. Now look at the 7mm and the range from 100 to 175 grain and the 7-08 is only optimum with weights up to about 154 grs, but most commonly only up to 140 grain.

Well my feeling is that if I am going to go full size the 1/2" difference in action length makes very little difference and with the 270's velocity advantage it extends the MPBR and down range trajectory so why not take advantage of that.

There's nothing I cant do with my .270 that I could do with a .280 or 30-06.
How so?
The one that more closely resembles a broom handle rather than a basket ball with like bullet weights is the one that bucks the wind, assuming they're both properly stabalized. Like a 300 gr .375 bullet compared ta a 300 gr .458 bullet. The difference between a 150 gr in .277 and a .284 wouldn't be enough to properly plug up an ant's bung hole. One note of interest is the 7-08 Ackley matches 270 Win factory load ballistics, so a 270 has an advantage in the fps dept.
Splitting hairs. Find the best rifle you want, in either one of the calibers. My decision would be based on the best deal for that particular rifle you want. I do agree with many here, that 270 ammo is going to be a lot more available in Timbuktu...

Actually, you can get 7mm bullets from 100-195gr , any of which would work fine out of the 7mm-08. The 175gr bullet was used as the standard bullet for years in the 7x57, and the 7-08 is no different, in reality.
The .270 will shoot slightly flatter, recoil slightly more, and burn slightly more powder (if you handload).
The 7mm-08 comes in a slightly shorter and lighter rifle, and can shoot heavier bullets that will penetrate a bit better when the target gets tough.
Take your pick, either will work great and you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference in the field.

A lot depends on what and how often you shoot ( cost of ammo). I like my Browning .270 and load it with 100 gr Speers spitzers and have a "spray" day with gophers. At over 3200 FPS out the barrel, the accuracy is spot on. For deer size game and 'yotes, the 130 grain do wonders and reach "way out there". I have a 30-06 also and actually prefer the .270. though they both do what I need done.

Yeah, no kidding. It appears the 7-08 is the big game cartridge that's ushering in the new era of non-magnum sensibility. By all rights this thread should have been shut down pages ago by those claiming that you aren't comparing apples and apples and therefore no contest... But so far the archaic 7mm Express
has only been mentioned once.Both are great cartridges but the .270 has alot of history over the 7mm-08. For hunting in Canada there is little game that can not be taken with a 130 gr bullet travelling at 3000 - 3100 fps but at the same time a 140 gr bullet at about 2800 fps can do the same.
Try both out see which one you like better, nothing wrong with having 2 guns.
