270 win or 7mm-08?

If your not reloading take a good look at factory ammunition being offered in both calibres that you will be buying. The 270 is by leaps and bounds your choice if you plan on shooting your gun much.

I've been agonizing over 7mm-08 lately, mainly due to the claims of mild recoil.

So i did the calculations here with 4 oz less for the short action:

http://www.handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp

7mm-08
Bullet weight in grains 140
Velocity in fps 2820
Powder charge in grains 46
Weight of firearm in lbs 7.75
Recoil Impulse in (lbs sec) 2.57
Velocity of recoiling firearm (fps) 10.67
Free recoil energy in (ft/lbs) 13.70

.270 Win
Bullet weight in grains 130
Velocity in fps 3060
Powder charge in grains 54
Weight of firearm in lbs 8.00
Recoil Impulse in (lbs sec) 2.72
Velocity of recoiling firearm (fps) 10.96
Free recoil energy in (ft/lbs) 14.92

Seems like very little difference between these in their most popular loadings.

Also seems like 7mm-08 is to .270 as .308 is to .30-06.

I must second, these two are very, very close.

I load hunting rounds in both chamberings with quality bullets.

Both are with Swift Scirocco II's

Here is the break down:

7mm-08: 150 gr.
Muzzle velocity: 2750 ft/sec @ 500 yards:1972 ft/sec
Muzzle energy: 2518 ft/lbs @ 500 yards:1296 ft/lbs

.270 130 gr.
Muzzle velocity: 2985 ft/sec @ 500 yards:2061 ft/sec
Muzzle energy: 2571 ft/lbs @ 500 yards:1226 ft/lbs

Both of these cartridges have capabilities FAR beyond what most shooters can do.

You can pick about numbers all day long but when it comes right down to it , the differences are so small that only an accountant would care about these values.

The ONLY difference will be what rifle they have in stock when you purchase.

The 7mm-08 is slightly more efficient if that even matters to ya.

As for the animals, they won't know the difference of .007".
