270 win VS a 270wsm

How much real differance is there between these 2 calibers. Have reloading stuff for 270 win but no gun and gonna buy a new gun this winter for big game hunting. Not sure the wsm is worth it. What advantage does the short mag have ?
 
higher velocity, so better trajectory, less wind drift, more downrange energy. fits in a short action rifle.

downfalls, higher ammo cost, more recoil



270 wsm is a hell of a cartridge, I like it

Practically speaking, not much. Although the WSM does offer better paper ballistics, I don't really know what game animal will notice the difference. They are both good for moose, and if you want to hunt grizzlies/brown bear, the a step up in caliber and bullet weight is, in my opinion, prudent.

Perhaps the WSM is available in a rifle the regular .270 is not (ie; Winchester 1885 or Browning Titanium). Other than that, there isn't much one will do that the other won't. Not that such logic should prevent you from buying whatever you like!;)
 
Unless you have a ton of .277" bullets on hand, check out the 7mm's, the .280 Rem, 7mm SAUM, 7mm RM, 7x57, and 7mm WSM for that power range. The 7mm/.284" bore does everything the .277" bore does, only better, and with far more options component wise, and better bullets. Plus, you get the versality of bullets from 100 to 180grs.
 
Have you looked at the ballistic differences between the 2? It's not that dramatic a difference. Sure you gain a couple extra FPS with the short mag (literally) but for the cost differences In ammo I would stick with the conventional 270 Win. If you want a serious hot load for a regular 270, I use 60.0 grains of reloader 22 with a 130 grain hornady interlock seated to 3.25 O.A.L.
I shot a nice mature 10 pt. buck with this load 2 weeks ago, the deer was quartering towards me on a very sharp angle.I placed the shot just in front of the shoulder and the deer didn't go 30 yds. When I cleaned and skinned him out I saw just how much power was in this specific load. The bullet entered the chest in front of the shoulder, took the top of the heart and one complete lung out, clipped the opposing lung towards the back, nailed the liver, unfortunately I got the stomach as well as some entrails before it exited the belly, and penetrated the upper rear quarter, passed through the dense muscle and out through the mid part of the upper rear quarter. Is a Short Mag going to do any better than that for the price?

PS, this load shoots damn near flat to 300 YDS.
 
Me, I see nothing about the .270 WSM to give up my .270 Win over. If I was going to go for a WSM it would be the 7mm WSM.
 
Difference in ammo is about $5 a box. Not muchh diff unless you plan on shootin a whole bunch. Hell I spend more then $5 on Tim Hortons coffee and doughnuts everyweek. Dont let cost of ammo be determining factor. There is actually less felt recoil from my 270 WSM compared to buddies 270 but then again not comparing apples to apples , 2 diff guns, .

I have owned both and i find the 270WSM 200fps faster and more than that it is more accurate with all bullet weights. If you already own a 270Win it's probably not worth it to change but if you are looking to buy i would go with the 270WSM.
