270 Winchester Magnum???

This is a FYI thread for reloader's who wish to experiment with Alliant Reloder #26. After the initial load results, I later found out that Speer had load data on the 270 Win. Alliant #26 130 gr. It appears that I was, at the most, 2.2 grains beyond the max load of Speer load data. However, I continued on course with my initial load development and Quickload data.

Ya don't get me wrong, I'm all for new experiments and data. What was your charge weight increments?
I am tempted to try RL26 in my 6.5 when I burn my barrel up.

Yeah, I figure a shorter bullet allows more powder in the case, and likely decreasing bearing surface (although that will be bullet dependent). I have heard that monometal bullets tend to be harder to drive fast too. We'll see. I am only using the GMX because I had a box on the shelf from a previous project, 2800fps is a bit slow for a monometal bullet IMO, but it'll do until I have a faster load.
 
It looks like RL16 and 130gr might get you close to your target of 3300 fps too. I was just checking out Alliant's web site and they show the following out of a 24" barrel:

130 Partition - 3202
130gr Speer - 3221
130gr Berger - 3213

Add your extra 3" of barrel length and you should be close - assuming Alliant's numbers are reproducible!

There is a difference between blowing a primer and blowing yourself up.
 
I have been using Reloder 23 behind the 140 Accubond in my 270.
It is an older BDL with a 22" barrel, and I get 3000 and pennies, even
in the short tube. Plenty for me, and brass lasts forever. Accuracy
is c. ¾ moa. Dave.

Have you tried RL16 Dave? I'm on the RL26 bandwagon with 150 Partitions. I know in the past you praised MRP, and I have some of that kicking around too.

Chuck, Chuck, Chuck........you sound like an old hen. LOL!!! "You kids get out of that tree or you will hurt yourself"!!! Bullet, power, case, primer, ammunition manufactures blow primers on daily basis, I would assume, testing their products. Don't worry about me, Chuck, I'm a big boy. Strange as this may seem, I have no Reloder 16 in my possession. I have RL7, 12, 15, 17, 19, 22, 23, 25, 26, but no 16. :)
I have not tried MRP in this 270, but I have no doubt it will work just fine, and deliver decent velocities as well.
My last 270 really liked Vihtavuori N165 with both 130 and 140 grain bullets. Dave.
 
It was an article I read years back about this that convinced me not to buy anything in WSM... a comparison between .270 and .270WSM showing at best a couple hundred fps between the two. Not enough difference to lose that extra round and add recoil...

In a 270 Win, do you get about 30fps per inch of barrel? That would bump my velocity 150fps, so 3225fps, the a powder change would increase that some more. Thats 200 fps more needed from a newer powder. Its possible but I would be very careful with going up there. What were the fps differences per increase of powder charge Track?

As a rule, 30 fps per extra inch of barrel. I had no fps spikes, however stiff bolt lift on three shots, same powder load. Any load with 61.6 gr. and less had no signs of pressure, until I hit 61.7 gr, stiff bolt lift. That will be the barrels conclusive pressure load using reloder 26 and the 130 gr. accubond, nothing will be reloaded beyond 61.5 gr. The rifle achieved its goal, and then some.

Interesting. I may have missed it already, but maybe run a quick load to see what pressure would be at. ( or someone can )
My rifles have never had a sticky bolt lift, they always show swipe or stamp first.
