270 Winchester musings

I'm actually quite fond of the 270, and it has proven it's capability in the field enough times to
make me believe that a 270 should be in my gun safe, not just to reside there, but to be used
regularly. Dave.

My first rifle was a 270 Winchester, I picked it because I wanted something other than a 30-06, but still wanted to be able to get factory ammo at Walmart/Crappy Tire.

When I switched to left handed, I was looking for another 270, but found a 7mm08 for a really good price. Now that I reload the lack of factory ammo at big box stores was no longer a concern. Still love the 270 though, and if I can't get the velocity I want from my 7mm08 I'll be looking to switch back.

If you don't reload I can think of a lot of worse options than the 270 if you wanted to be a one gun hunter.

You mean the new 270 Win. Magnum. My gun club is down for renovation and won't be open until early May, otherwise Peterson cases would of been utilized. 6.5 PRC, double humbug!

Make sure you update your thread with the results once you get some rounds downrange

This thread reminds me that I need to develop a new load for my 270 using this jug of D4350 I bought. Bought shortly before I bought my 7mm08, with the intention of buying a lefty 270 to use it with, and the powder is too slow for my the little 308-based case.

I've shot enough factory loaded 270 Win to know what it's all about. 130gr PSP @ 2900 fps, flat shootin' sum#####

Nothing kills better than a 270, I read that on CGN. It's a zapper and you can get that ammo at any hardware store

How's the 3300 fps RL26 load working in the Peterson?

So many people here would die in snares...

My favourite Moose load involved the "original" Barnes bullets , soft copper jacket over lead in 180 grain. Those punched hard. I like them because I could also slip in a 130/140 grain partition cartridge for longer range. These made the 270 very versatile. Barnes stopped making the heavy 180 grain many years ago and I had used up my supply.

I have a .270 that was my go-to hunting rifle for years, I still take it on stalking days. It shoots 150g bullets with perfect precision and has put a few bears in the freezer. I mostly use a 7mm RM now, for no other reason than I like to have choices and I have a better scope on the 7mm, but both rifles are the same rifle - Steyr Prohunters.

Woodleigh makes the 180gr Weldcore PPSN still. And of course there's the 6.8 Western coming, with a handful of heavier for caliber offerings.
