270 Winchester resizing

Hi All

I purchased a used 270 winchester borrowed some dies and brass from a friend to make up some handloads After resizing and trimming the cases I tried to chamber some unprimed cases to see if they fit they were hard to chamber the only place I could see any marks on the case were where the bolt face contacts the case when you close it.

Any ideas?

Any time I have heard of an issue like that it generally means that the brass is too long. On a side note. A buddy bought a rifle that had been rebarreled and there was no through in it. This caused rounds to jaim.

The best way to see if there are any other places where the case may be getting stuck is to colour the brass with a black sharpie and try to chamber it. Any place it rubs will take the black off and you will see where the issue is. That's how we found the problem.
 
Were the brass new or once fired in another rifle? If once fired, be sure you did a complete resize. (shell holder completely touching the die.)If you did a full size, the marking with the sharpie will tell where you are touching. Let us know.
 
I had this happen once years ago. Solved by snugging up the shell holder more to the die bottom.
 
Bring your full length sizer die down until it touches the shell holder and then lower the ram and give it another1/4 turn down. Raise your ram and then tighten the lock nut and do them again. Sounds like they are too long. Should solve your problem.
 
1) Make double sure the sizing die is hitting the shell holder, when the case is full in.
Even the best of presses have some spring in them, so just hitting the shell holder when empty won't do. Turn the die a bit deeper, then when the case is full in, look to see if the die is solid on the shell holder.

2) The 270 Winchester is one of those cases with potential to stretch the neck out a bit, when pulling the bullet sizing ball through the neck, if it is not lubricated and is hard to pull through.
This is often the cause of the trouble when people say they can't get a newly sized case to go into the chamber.
I still haven't come up with a one-method-for-all-cases that works well for lubricating the inside of the necks, for resizing.
Sometimes I use a bristle brush, of the type used in barrel cleaning. Sometimes just using the brush dry works, sometimes it doesn't.
A very small amount of oil on it will work great, but the powder may stick on the internal neck section, which is not really desireable.
A cloth patch around the bristle brush often works well, but may need a tiny bit of lubrication.
Oh yes, a goodly number on here will shout, "Use mica."
I'll bet there were at least six times that I have tried using mica, white or black, but was never happy with it, for one reason or another, and always went back to mechanical cleaning.
 
If you are using one of the stronger presses that will allow you to overcam the handle then set the die up to let it do so. This will size the case more than you can on brute strength alone.
 
No luck, I resized and trimmed no luck still very stiff closing hard opening
factory loads ok not sure whats going on it's an old JC higgings model50 with an FN action looked in very good shape. Also I tried chambering my resized brass in another 270 no problems.????????????????????????

You may have said it, but I am wondering if you used;
1) New brass.
2) Brass fired in the same rifle, or
3) used brass from another 270.

If the answer is 3, I may have a solution.
Your problem is just like I went through a while back, with a different calibre rifle, but same thing.
Also, before we go any further, is the neck expaner button coming easily through the neck, or is it coming hard through. I brought this up a while back, as a possible solution, but you have not stated.

Edited to say, the fact the cases go in another 270, just prove the one you have has a very tight chamber. This is a good way for a rifle to be, and not unusual in a quality rifle, like yours.
 
I had the same problem with a Parker Hale. round chambered in Sako but not the PH, ended up turning the die down another 8th or quarter turn. Headspace is tight if not downright short.
 
yes, I used brass from another 270 figured a FL resize is a FL resize picked up
some more used brass from a different rifle and cleaned up trimmed up. Made sure my chamber was clean these chamber ok but still a little tight probably going to have to breakdown and buy some new unprimed brass and perhaps a different set of dies I know for my 6.5x55 the Redding dies worked better.
