Gday.
Ive recently been reminising on old an more recent times of hunting with my first "big" game rifle, a Remington 700 sps with a Leopuld VX2 x50 scope when i was 18.
since those days a few bugs have bitten, the rifle bug an the deer huntin bug...

Just because that rifle was my first I often look past it an grab the 35whelen or for "longer ranges" the 300wsm..(thats another story in its own).

Im considering sitting the wsm aside for the rest of the year an aim at a trophy stag with the .270

So I would like to Ask, which big game animals have you shot with a .270, at what range with what Ammo.

cheers
W/L

I've shot mule deer, black bear and grouse with a .270. I don't own one anymore, but there is nothing wrong with a .270, especially when used with a good bullet like a TTSX ;)

I have shot moose out to 300yds with a 270 with a 150 grn Nosler partition. I found Partitions too much bullet for deer though, so I shoot 140 grn Accubonds or 130 grn Sierras

I've shot a lot of moose with the 130gr Hornady handloads well as deer, black bear +antelope..........Harold

I've shot white tails, mule deer, elk, moose, bear, and all sort of vermin as well a beef cattle with it. 130gr Sierras started the career then Barnes X, Noslers Partitions and Accubonds, TSXs, etc. it works!

The second largest moose I ever shot was with the old 130 gr Silvertip, and at a range too far to post lest I be flamed by fifty guys here. Let's just say it was a single shot, beyond 500 yd, and witnessed by three other fellows.

As well, big mountain caribou, bears, and sheep have quickly succumbed to the 270 Win. Most importantly, it is my distinct impression that I have had more one shot kills with the 270 than any other cartridge, and I have killed a lot of game with rifles from 25-06 to 375 H&H over the past 50 years.

Many whitetail, 1 bear for me with this specific cartridge.

Pretty much harvested everything clean to date. Taking it this year again as well for deer.

Jacky "O" did not like the 270 for no reason.

I would not be afraid to shoot any NA big game animal with a 270.

a couple of moose inside 100 yds - 140 gr hornady BTSP at 2800 fps handloads
tons of deer out to 300 - various loads factory and home made
1 antelope at 325 - Speer Nitrex ammo - 130 gr Grand slam bullets at 3100 fps
2 mule deer - same Nitrex ammo

The 270 win is good for everything except big bears (in my opinion) - Jason Yuke is right on !!!

Unfortunately, Speer has quit making Nitrex ammo, too bad because it was very fast and very accurate (for factory).

On the Antelope hunt the guides made us preshoot a target before the hunt so they could see if the guns were lined up - off the bench my 2 shots were cutting each other in half about 2 inches dead above the bullseye - (I told him it was sighted 2 inches high at 100) ok the Guide says, you are good to go with me....

I use a Husqvarna .270 I use 130 Gr Hornady SSTs in. I'm also handloading 150 grn Sierra Gamekings. The 130s work great for deer and moose, but I'm going to the 150s just for that little extra "umph" for bigger moose.

I shot a bull moose at 220 yards using the cheap Winchester Power Points, hit in the lungs he didn't go 10 yards before going down. I now use the XP3 just for the extra power but its not likely necessary, just makes you feel better if you decide to take a long shot. I have full confidence in this calibre. It always boils down to shot placement though.

My longest critter taken over the last couple of years was a mule deer doe with a handloaded triple shock outta my .270 Win. Lasered @ 328 yards (299 m).

The 270 is capable of so much more with the advacement of bullet construction
