no doubt there is alot of rifles out there chambered in this cartridge

its been sort of untalked about recently, with all the short mag etc development

I personally think its probably the best cartridge (or one of the few best) for deer sized game, especially in open country where its high velocity shines.

who out there shoots this ol warhorse, and what bullet do you use? any good 270 hunting stories to go along?? :D

My rifle really really REALLY liked

IMR 4350 - 53.9 grains
Hornady Spire 130 gr
Fire formed - necked sized only brass
CCI large Rifle Primers.

Then I sold it - 'cause I'm an idiot:redface:

I've got a couple of 270's. Both Mausers, one a 98, and the other a 66. I like the 130 grainers out of this caliber for deer. I have to agree, it is one of the best cartridges out there for that size of animal. Also Hornady 139's are a great bullet when loaded for the .270. Not my choice, but one of the guys I moose hunt with uses the 139 Interlok offering as his moose load, and he does a good job with them too.

I love my .270 for the open shots we get here in Southern Sask. Myself and my hunting buddies all shoot the .270 and I have witnessed some amazing long distance shots and have seen the deer drop stone dead using this awesome cartridge. It is with truly the #1 whitetail cartridge going. Nothing like a fast flat shooting round thats easy on the shoulder.
Im yet to fully utilize the true potential of this cartridge but know its capabilites and feel confident hunting with it. I prefer a 130 gr. Nosler CT Silver Tip behind some H-4831 sc. I took 6 whitetails with this combo 2 were big bodied bucks.
This year Im shooting a 270 wsm, same good old .270 feel with a bit more jazz and short action cycle. Should be good.

Cheers!!

I'm a 'closet' .270 owner/shooter... got a blued Rem 700 BDL action with a 24" stainless factory take-off barrel mated to it. It's a keeper...

270

Probably more than half of all the moose I have taken have been with the 270 Winchester, the rest with assorted other calibers like the 303, 7 mag etc.
Anyone who passes up on a 250 yard shot on a moose critter with a 270 is crazy.
Most of mine fell for the plain old 130 grain Silvertip,I guess they would call that a premium back in the day?
Brno and Remington were the guns of choice, not much has changed.

My son has been shooting a 270 since he was 11, first a Winchester m70 carbine and now a Tikka m695. Infact the Tikka is for sale in the EE, the onoly reason it's for sale is he has moved up to a 30=06 for a trip to Africa. The PH recommends it as a minimum calibre.

I have a Win 70 in 270 that I got from my brother. I was going to rebarrel it to something at least remotely interesting, but it shoots well enough that i have left it alone, except for a needed reblue. I use Barnes 130gr X over 59 gr of RL22, .5" to .75" groups regularly. I don't really care for the cartridge, but it is hard to argue with success. - dan

My first gun was a Tikka T3 Lite in 270win that I purchased 2 yrs ago. It is still my go to gun for caribou and I'll never sell it.
I've not gotten into reloading (yet) so all it's ammo has been factory stuff. It seems to like Winchester 130gr and Federal Premium Vital-Shok 130gr.

I purchased my model 70 Winchester new in 1948 and promptly installed a Weaver K4. Started out with Silvertips then loaded my own with 130 grainers and IMR4350. For years that rifle has served me well. Has a new scope now and shows signs of use but it still my favourite and gets preferential treatment in the gun safe.

.270

Reloader 22 and 140 grain Hornady bullets have shot well in several rifles (Husky 98, Model 70 Super Grade, Ruger No.1) with great velocity and accuracy. Wonderful deer and caribou load. I have shot moose with it as well with the 150 grain Barnes X.

I don't use it as much now but only because it is so predictable and I enjoy experimenting.

270 Win

I had one for 25 years and it has killed more deer than all the rest of my rifles, the only reason i sold it was i bought a 270WSM in a Win M70 featherweight ( I am a southpaw), i used 60gr of H4831 with a 130gr. partition at 3100fps. Very accurate load.

Except for a brief stint on gramp's 30-30 it's all I ever hunted with.. this year will be my 33rd as a 270 hunter. I have owned a Husky crown grade that was stolen when my bro borrowed my truck. Presently own a win mod 70 purchased back in '81. I presently, (since 1984), pump Hornady interlocks in 140 gr btsp through her and she shoots sub .75 groups consistantly and I find it deadly accurate and effective to 450 yards. I have dropped moose, elk and deer with it and it performs so well that I have never felt the need to change or try anything else. Confidence is everything in choosing a rifle and with me it's proven time and again just how effective it can be in the right hands. Might not be for everybody because of the stigma associated with "minimum caliber", but if it were not for the bigger-better-faster-stronger proponants, this stigma would never exist. I have never lost an animal although I had to track a couple for under a hundred yards in thick brush, and one elk at 15 ft that was shot through the neck totally destroying c2 and c3 that ran 300 yards with no computer connection. Might not be the most versitile as far as load choices go but it's the only one gun...one bullet...for all ungulates, that you would ever need in your gun safe.

My first rifle after tons of reading articles in various magazines/talking to people was a Browning 'A Bolt' in 270. I spent months going back and forth trying to decide between the 30-06 and the 270.
They talked about "Jack O'Connor" saying the 270 would knock over anything in North America etc etc etc, that was it for me.
It killed eveything that i shot at. Loved it.Since then i've gone thro several rifles in 30-06, and now i'm back with a brand new Tikka M695 wood/blue in 270 with a Leoupold 3-9x40 VXII on top.
I use factory premium ammo in 140gr accubond.

Recommends or requires? I would be wary of any PH that thinks bigger is always better. These are the same guys who shoot solids at dangerous game. Hmmm, lets poke a hole in a cape buffalo without any energy transfer and then shoot it five more times as it charges us, gee, I wonder if it has something to do with those solids? Nah, couldn't be. We've been shooting dangerous game with them for years, and they ALWAYS need more than one shot! F#*%ing idiots.

If he CAN use a 270, then he SHOULD use his 270. Hunt with what you are confident in, period. If penetration is a concern then shoot those awful Barnes X or better yet shoot FailSafes.

Cheers.

I also used one for over 20 years. Shot an awful lot of deer and one black bear and believe that it is one of the ultimate deer rifles where you need to reach out. Tons of power for deer and doesn't beat you to death either. Currently using a 280 and freely admit that it doesn't give me any advantage for deer over the 270. This one is just more accurate than my old gun and a little bit lighter.

good thread, hunted with one for 15 years. When I do my part it never lets me down. Lots of deer and more than a few black bears have been quickly dispatched. No doubt my favourite go to gun
