270 Winchester

I doubt that I have hunted as extensively as some but here is my 1987 Brno ZKK-600 in .270. (and one pic that aso incluses my ZKK-601 in .223 Rem) I swear by the caliber and I swear by this rifle. They are an awesome and lethal combination on whitetail, mule-deer and even several coyotes. (When times were lean financially it is the only center-fire that survived the forced purge. :( ) I have loved this rifle from the day I picked it up many years ago.

To date, I've never been let down by it with deer...one shot one kills. (Not to say that I won't...just not so far.) Admittedly I have never shot anything larger than deer with it. That said, I do not think that I would hesitate if needed. I think if I feel that I do need anything larger, I think I would probably go straight for the .300 Win Mag (JMHO..I love it.). Anything smaller I usually just go either rimfire or my .223 Rem.

I have and have had many other calibers but I would say for my needs that these 4 gett'er all done. I realize that there are lots of calibers that meet the same needs and maybe even better (and I have or have had some of them.)...but the choice of ammo/bullets manufactures, all around performances and readily availability...make them tough to beat in my book.

TOU

P.S. Oh...since I don't hand-load, I usually shoot Hornady's Light-Magnums in 140 grain, sighted dead on for 250 yards. It has served well for a good all around set up and I almost never shoot any other load.

I bought a Browning .270 A-Bolt with a Leupold 1.5-5 Vari-X III as my first rifle for moose hunting. I have shot two moose with it so far using 150 grain Nosler Partitions. Both bullets recovered in the opposite side rib cage.

260 is a bit better in my books still, but no point in hijacking this thread ;)
Then let me........:D
Actually I had a 280 and it worked well...went to a 7mm-08 and it worked well too:)
Lately I've been playing with a 260 and it's an Amazing little performer, how I overlooked this one for the last decade I don't know ???
I've Never had a 270:redface: ...but I suspect it wouldn't do anything different then the "others" I've had.

If it was still 50 years ago...I'd likely have tried one:D ;)

The 270 is one of the Greats.....No doubt about that:cool:

The 30-06 might be considered the most boring cartridge, but thanks to O'connor, the 270win is probably the most overated cartridge.:D

Yeah, I used to be a big fan of Jack O'connor and enjoyed reading his articles as Gun editor in Outdoor Life magazine. Now I believe he must have made it all up. I'll never buy another .270, 7x57mm or .338!!! He should have followed the example of the real great's like Elmer Keith in the first place. Now there was someone who knew gun's and could really shoot. Seem's to me if I remember this correctly I read an article once where he shot a Mule deer at 500 yards with a 2' barreled slip gun.

I shot at least a half dozen or so deer from '90 to about '95 with a 24" Weatherby Vanguard in 270 Win....most with a 130 Partition....longest shot was about 325-350 yards judging by bullet drop.....this one would do 3100 with the 130...sold it in a weak moment about '97 or so....there's lots of hype about short mag 7mms...280's...280AI's 270 short mags etc...but they don't give you much over a good 270 Winchester....

I have owned several 270's over the years, and it is the cat's meow for practically anything in North America. I shot my best-scoring muley with one, and never hesitated to whack an elk or moose with the 270 either. My present one is a brand-new 700 CDL, and I just ran 3 - 130 TSX's into .51" @ 100 meters [velocity is 3130] Believe I'll have to pack it a bit this fall to see what happens when I run one of those through a game animal. My usual load is the 140 Accubond, which also is very accurate in my 270. Regards, Eagleye.

here we go agin.... a 30-06 don't give you much over a .308... a 25-06 don't give you much over a .257... a 300WM don't give you much over a .303.
Seriously... .270WSM is 200fps faster, is more efficient, has less recoil and is a short action compared to a .270WIN that is a lot more than "not much":p
You call it hype.... I call it progress!

What you say is true, but most game is shot at under 200yds and the ballistic advantage you speak of makes little difference in the real world.

If you are saying that a 270wsm produces less recoil than a 270win,I must disagree.

If you were to crank a .270Win up to Max and then match that velocity with a Short Mag the WSM would have less recoil.
I know... I know... its splitting hairs...
I'll concede your point Stubs.;)

past 300 yards, you're gonna have to *know* your trajectory, regardless of what you're shooting

I cant really think of any situation on anything you'd hunt with a .27 caliber rifle, where Id take a shot with a WSM that one couldnt pull off with regular 270.

So energy and velocity are of no advantage at long range....

well yes, but its not like we're comparing a 300 savage to a 30-378

given 250 yard zero's, the regular 270 drops 15" @ 400 yards. the WSM drops 13"

two inches at almost 1/4 mile...WOO HOO :D Energy is still over 1500 ft-lbs for the regular 270 (data compared in Accubond 140s @ 2950 fps vs 3200 fps)

I stand by my comment, any shot that can be taken with a WSM, can just as easily be accomplished by the 80 year old 270. Dont get me wrong, I think the WSM is great, I loaded up some 130 TSX in a friends T3 the other day, pretty slick looking round, but in the field, alot of its advantages are reduced to slim, but on paper, especially in a Winchester or Browning magazine ad, they look pretty wicked...

I disagree... the energy difference is 200-300 foot pounds between them at 400 yards depending on the bullet and if you factor in wind drift and bullet drop it can make a marginal hit a miss or worse.
I am immune to your reverse logic.... faster and harder is better.
