270 Winchester

I am now officially looking for a "classic" .270 - having found my .358 BLR. :)

Let's have some suggestions about the very best "carrying", hunting .270...

A Winchester model 70 Featherweight comes to mind...

Let the suggestions flow - Jeff.

I bought a 270 wsm a coupleyears ago and I can't stop shooting it. It is by far my most used rifle.

Or, an "original" Ruger M77, w/ the adjustable trigger and tang safety! Yes...:)

Love the 270 myself and have one in a Mountaing rifle, this one is my go to gun each year for whitetail! I have others that will do the job but the 270 is always along for the ride in November. Light accurate and lays things down! In the age of the magnums the 270 still gets top marks from me.
I crank mine up with 130g Noslers BTips (for deer), pushed by a health dose of H4350, great accurate leathel loads.
As for at range killing capability its PAST MINE! so I don't have to worry. The 270 to date has made the longest 1 shot kill for me on a whitetail +- 300 yards, In Ontarios Nortern part there is not many of these to take so it far exceeds my needs.

Rem 700 BDL. had one, loved it, miss it. it;s now a .338-06... never shoot the doner, never shoot the doner....

My Browning A-Bolt II .270 was my go to gun for whiteteail and mulies up until this year (lightweight and accurate - great carry gun). I am still taking it along as a backup to my new overkill T3 Camo Stainless .300WM this year during hunting season - never failed to fill a tag. Great riflle for deer.

For my .270 loads, I use CCI Large rifle #200 primers with 58.5 grains of H4831 and 140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip or 140gr. Accubonds.

Longest shot I ever made was with a Browning Safari long action 98 mauser in 270 win. Across a 1/4 section @ 500 meters, no damage to the meat ,center lung shot. The deer humped up , side stepped back and forth 2 times , stood for 5 seconds and fell over. :D

It was this rifle

Barrel length for .270?

Hi Guys,

If I'm looking for a .270, should I establish a minimum barrel length for "good" performance? What I mean is: shouldI pass on the Ruger Ultralight for instance, because of it's 20" barrel? Is 20" enough for "standard" length cartridges?

Thanks for any help you can offer - Jeff.

Jeff,

I have shot a Husqvarna Fwt and with its 20 1/2" barrel for quite a few years. It gets 130s going well over 3000 fps, but is pretty noisy. :D

I was with my father-in-law many years ago when he was 72 years young and used it to shoot a great Dall Ram. It was around 270-300 yds, and he didn't need any hold over to do it of course. I need to dig that picture out and post it here sometime.

It works fine on our big AK-Yukon bull moose with 150 partitions, too.

Having said that, there is only a few ounces difference between a 20" rifle and a 24", so you pays your money and takes your choice, I guess.

Ted

Bought a Parker Hale 1100 Classic in 270 with plans to renarrel it to 338-06.
shot a yote at 350 yards.
They are very lethal on skunks digging in bear bait barrels too, with 160 Noslers.;)

Nugget has had outstanding results with his Grandfather's Belgium BAR, but he keeps changing loads so much I cannot remember any to list.

Thanks Ted,

I suppose you're right...and if I'm looking to maximize the long range potential, then I might as well go for a couple extra inches of barrel.
I am thinking hard about the Remington 700 CDL, as I love the styling of this rifle and just wondered if a 24" barrel was too much...but I guess not. :)

I appreciate your response - Jeff.

ted Your knowledge and experience with the venerable 270 in inexaustable!
It makes me want toget back home and tamp some 4831 into an old Dominion case and load some old screw machined partitions up and go hunting.

I have both 24" and 22" bbls on 270's and find no real difference in the performance other than the noise factor noted by WNot. Any differences between rifles is entirely covered by the variation in barrels IMHO.
