Hey guys. I just bought a savage model 14 in 270 wsm and I am starting to load for it. I'm using 140 grain berger vlds with rl-22. My question is my berger manual says col is 2.860" I measured my lands on my gun and they are only 2.800". I made up some at a col of 2.785" and before I shoot them I'm just curious if that will be safe and that is normal to be smaller than what the book says. I load for other calibers and the bergers are usually longer than what the book says so it makes me wonder this time cuz they are shorter. Any advice would be greatly appreciate. Thanks andrew.

Did you use a bullet comparator to determine where the lands are? If you did, then remember that the bullet will stick about 3/8" (approximate) into the barrel before contacting the lands. Manual numbers are listing from the case head right to the tip of the bullet, NOT where it contacts the lands as this is where a reloader separates from the reloading manual to increase accuracy. I would measure your distance to the lands with a comparator, back the bullet up 0.020" and load them with the listed starting loads and work up.
I haven't tried Bergers. i use Hornady 150g and Nosler 140 and 150g Accubonds. They work quite well for me. I'm going to be working up a load with some 140g Barnes TTSX and we'll see how that goes. I will send you the load info that i have used if you'd like.
