Starting to reload my own stuff but the options are endless for powders. I'm reloading federal rounds with 140gr hornady sst. Wondering if anyone has found any sweet recipes. So far tried with h4831 (not bad) and Retumbo (still fine tuning that one). Also thinking of trying Magpro but since I do very small batches, I don't want to buy 4 or 5 powders. Any advice??

H4350 for 130 to 140gr hunting bullets at 3100fps
I use:
Best load is 135-140gr bullets using H4350 at 3050-3100fps, outstanding accuracy, power and "reasonable" recoil
Most difficult to shot accurately load is 165gr bullets using Retumbo at 2900-2950fps, superb power, good accuracy and abusive muzzle blast/recoil
I wanted to go heavy and fast (165gr 2900fps) but ended up medium and very fast (140gr 3100fps).

- Varget for 110gr V-Max - Varmint Exterminator
- H4350 for 130 to 140gr hunting bullets - 270 WSM Sweetspot
- H4831 for 150gr and over - I prefer faster more accurate 140gr pills
- Retumbo for 165gr Matrix Ballistics hunting VLD - too much power/recoil/blast

I still need to check my barrel twist because evrything recommends at least a 1/9.5 for 150gr and over. I think that my 26 inch barrel is boosting my speed too. Factory 130gr by federal are supposedly rated at around 3250 fps but I consistently spit them out at 3310 to 3330 fps.
I suppose too fast isn't always best either.
I like the BC for these hornady sst 140's because aside from hunting I like to practice at ranges up to 550 yrds, so accurate loads are sort of my goal.

- 150gr works great in 1-10" twist, you can check that even Berger 150gr Hunting VLD have a 1-10" recommended barrel twist.
- Matrix Ballistics makes a 165gr bonded hunting VLD with true 0.630 - 0.650 G1 BC but it works best in 1-9" twist, 1-10" seems okay at sea level if temperature is above 15C! http://www.matrixballistics.com/.277-Caliber-rifle-bullets.html#matrixballisticsVLD
