270 WSM for moose

I use 140gr Partitions but I have read a lot of good things about the accubonds.
As far as distance after I saw what it did on a 200lb deer at 390 yards I see no reason why it would not work on a moose at a similar distance.

I would go with the AccuBond. While I'm sure either would work if you put it in the vitals, the Ballistic Tips tend not to give as much penetration as other bullet designs. Have you considered the Barnes TSX?

Best of luck Adrian, 3 people in my moose party are using 270 WSM. I bought one for my son (winny 70) when he graduated high school and I really loved the cartridge and bought one soon after.

We are all using 160 gr partitions, but I reload, so it is easier.

I would lean with the Accubonds, they are a good solid bullet. I hate ballistic tips, maybe silver ones are better???? I don't know.

AND, forget about range. If you are comfortable shooting at it, shoot away. 270 WSM has more than enough energy to drop a moose at whatever range you see him.

NOT the ballistic tip.

Used the 150s from a WSM on one deer... never again.

First shot behind the shoulder, big entrance, NO damage to the far rib cage.

Second shot (wasn't sure the first had been a good hit) fluked out and hit him on the run in the back of the neck at the base of the skull: bullet didn't exit.

It hit one bone, blew up and penetrated less than 4 inches.

A Silvertip is not a ballistic tip. 2 different bullets, but both are capable.

Adrian, Either would work Buddy, The best answer I can give you is whichever is most accurate in your rifle, and shoots best out of a cold barrel.
I would assume that you get about the same weigh retention and penitration from both.

I would go with the 150 just because it's a bit bigger punch and would keep my distance less than 150 yards.

Uh, 10 grains doen't make a diffrence, and the Accubond will likely penetrate a lot father in a high velocity cartridge.

The Ballistic Silvertip is a Ballistic Tip with some useless lubalox and a different color tip, that is it. If yo don't believe me call Nosler. And you won't get the same penetration out of both, I tried in a .270 WCF once and the difference between the two is about 7 inches in wet newspaper at 300yds. Yes, on a medium like that that isn't overly rough on bullets, that is a big difference.
Just for your info the 130gr TSX's didn't stop in the newsprint, it kept sailing(30").

I misread Adrian's post... A ballistic silvertip is different than a winchester silver tip... And your right, a ballistic silvertip is just a coated Ballistic tip...
But... you really think that on a game animal there would be a discernable difference between a 150 gr Ballistic tip, and a 140 gr accubond? Not likely, and moose arent made of wet newspaper. Both will kill very well, so shoot whatever your gun likes best.
I'll be sure to tell a good friend who has shot about 10 moose with a 139 gr ballistic tip's out of a 7mm rem mag that they wont kill a moose.

Oh, I am sure it'll kill them, so will a rock if you use it right, I just wouldn't use either. If the meat's in the freezer, Good on ya.

Ballistic Tips may work on Ontario calf moose, they probably only average 300 lbs live weight
