.270 WSM for moose?

I like premium bullets. Many cheap old geezers argue that they're not necessary, and are expensive. They're right, but if an extra $30 or $40 is going to make it or break it for you, I think that hunting and firearms aren't the right hobby for you, and frankly, display a lack of respect for your game.

The 30 to 40 dollars only hold true if they only get one box of 'premium' cartridges.

I hunt with a guy that bought one box of fail safes (50 plus tax in 3006) and never practiced or sighted in with them, does that show respect for the game. He ended up getting the moose by shooting out its knees, 2 of them, 15 shots later.

I convinced him to use much cheaper remington coreloks and practice with atleast one box before the season started. The last moose was chest shot and died much quicker.

Nosler Accubond or Partition in 150 grain, or Barnes Vor-tx 130 grain TTSX.
Try all three and see which shoots best in your rifle...the lighter bullet in the
Barnes is offset by the TTSX bullet holding it's mass together on impact and
it's great penetration. In traditional premium ammo go with 150 grain.

Premium bullets aren't a cure for a lack of brain cells ;). You should have given him one of these at the very least :slap:

I just bought a M70 FW in 270wsm and planning on shooting 140gr Accubonds out of it(if it likes em, which I'm sure it will)
Beautiful Rifle :)

Was hitting 8" gong at 300yards today with plain jane 150gr super-x.
Not bad for just sitting on back of truck box and using tailgate for a rest w/ sandbag

Never to old to try something new.You know what you dont like, something new you might.
I've got too many sheckles tied up in my 270Win to switch

700 BDL action. Trued, blasted & blued
Gaillard stainless bbl, fluted by Corlanes
McMillan Edge handle.
Topped with a VXII 3x9LR
All work done by Dennis.

130 grain Swift Scirocco II, high BC and bonded core.

Don't get caught up on bullet weight.A premium high BC bullet of normal for caliber weight will be far more effective than a heavy for caliber bullet when you get out to distance.Plug in some numbers into the ballistics programs and you will see what the numbers are.

These factors are most important in order, IMO:
A) shot placement
B) shot placement
C) bullet construction/quality
D) projectile weight

The moose aren't the toughest creature around either.

Remington make a 150 Accutip, kind of fragile and not a premium bullet but very flat shooting.

Thanks Everyone for your input.
Getting my new scope this weekend, so I'll be going to the range next week with a few boxes of ammo recommended here. Will let you all know the results.
I think the safest bet is to go with 150gr as i'm not a crack shot in the field, and i'll be looking for what ammo I can produce the best groups with and stick with that...practice, practice, practice.

Thanks again,
Rich.
