Ok, so here's the scoop... I have a Browning A-bolt II chambered in .270 wsm, and I'm going about working up a load for it. I do know that the gun seems to like 130 grn bullets, but my experience with this cartridge is limited as I haven't had it too long. I've done some internet searching and find so much info that it's almost impossible to tell the good from the bad. Does anyone out there have any good accurate loads for this calibre? So far I've tried Hornady GMX's with IMR 4350 but it didn't impress me. What bullet/powder should I try next? I'm looking for a descent long-range performer, and the GMX is supposed to be just that, but I'm kinda expecting to end up right back with Hornady's proven SP bullet, which every other rifle I load for really likes, regardless of calibre. Soooo....

Suggestions, folks?

I don't have a .270WSM, but I do have a 7mm WSM, and that's only .007" difference. The best powder I've found for mine [x-bolt composite stalker] is Winchester Supreme 780. Accurate and good velocity [I use a chony]. The next best is Retumbo. With H 4831 I couldn't get the velocities I was looking for. I'm mostly working with 150 or 154 gr bullets. I've used the SST's [not great] and Interbond [much much better]. The Nosler Accubonds were great. Accubonds are the most consistly accurate bullets I've ever tried. They make so many guns into MOA or better rifles, and you know they'll perfom great on game. They're probably my favorite bullets overall.
So get some accubonds and some Supreme 780 powder, and you should be set.

Retumbo with 140gr Accubonds and Federal 215 primers gives me under half inch groups all day out of both of my Tikka T3 LS 270WSM's. LOVE THE CALIBER and BULLET combo!! Very impressed with results on elk, moose, bears, deer.

Other powders to try 7828SSC, WS 780, MagPro, H1000. I have all of them but loved the load development with the Retumbo so I stuck with them.

Thanks guys, I'll definately try the accubonds and I think Retumbo will be my next powder. I've tried Hornady SST's and interbonds (out of a .308 mind you) but couldn't get results out of them. It seems oftem Hornady's attempts at new and unusual (in this case the GMX) often end up less inpressive than their old tried and true spire points.

Thanks for the input, keep it comin guys!

Funny thing is i got the best results for my girlfriends .270 wsm with 130 gr GMX bullets and imr 4350 powder. I think it has more to do with the rifle than the bullet. I used Accubonds years ago and even though they were plenty accurate the first time i used them I shot a bull elk at a lazered 150 ish yards an had 3 of them come apart on the shoulder.....Needless to say i won't use ACCUBONDS ANYMORE! If i use Noslers it's partitions .

Agreed! My Browning may very well like something completely different from a Tikka. It does shoot extremely well with federal blue box 130 grn (the cheap stuff, yeah) so for now I'm gonna keep playing with the 130's.....but I may try some factory 140's in the near future to get a comparison.

Also my twist rate is 1 in 10.

Ok so after reading all the posts again I decided to get some 140 grainers....call me crazy but I went with Hornady SST's. Also got some Reloder 19. Hoping to try it this weekend, I'll post a report if I do.

My favorite load so far has been 140gr accubonds, 58.5 gr of IMR 4350, and CCI Benchrest primers. Shooting around 0.5 MOA from a 700 remington with a trigger job.

your mileage may vary.

Well the SST's performed MUCH better than the GMX's, with 61.2 grn Reloder 19 I was getting 1.25" groups at 100. I'm going to play around with the powder charge by a couple tenths of a grain and possibly the COL as well, I'm quite confident I can knock the group sizes down to .5" in time.

My 270WSM shoots anything well, but I have settled on either the AccuBond in 130 or 140, depending on the velocity of the load and the distance I expect to shoot, or the Remington Core Lokt in 140 grain. Either IMR-4350 or H-4831 produce very nice groups. For deer these are about the best loads I have found.

I had the boys at Corlane in Dawson Creek build me a beautiful 270 WSM with a Lilja Barrel. It is a great rifle and shoots almost any load under an inch for 3 shots (light contour). However, during load development groups shrank noticeably using R22 instead of R19. Also, velocities were higher.

The 140 Accubonds shot great however, my luck on game with TSX Barnes has been better so I settled on 63.5 gr R22 and a 130 gr TSX. Pretty stiff load but seems be be okay. I don't want to put down the measured velocity as I don't quite believe it myself.

When I do my part, the 130 TSX will go 3 shots 0.3 to 0.4" 3 Elk and 4 deer with it so far. What more can one ask for?

R22 eh? That might be my next try if R19 doesn't get better than it is now with experimentation.

THREAD RES!

Ok, so I haven't had much time to play around with my .270 wsm lately but I had it out today. With the 140 grn SST's and 61.3 grn R19, it grouped 1.5" at 200 m. Gonna retry the load with slightly longer COL, if no improvement then I'm on to another powder. Current groups are good but not spectacular.

It's been a while, but I've been through some more powders.... I recently went from a 140 grn SST to a 130 of same... So far it's looking like just under 1.5" groups at 200 with IMR 4831, 62.4 grn. Closer, but not good enough yet.
