Been wanting to 'play' with a rifle chambered in 7mm WSM for quite some time. The spankin' new Rem 700 SPS seems to be a logical place but I note the SPS only comes from the factory in .270 WSM or .300 WSM.

Should I forgo my 'want' of a 7mm WSM in favour of a .270 WSM so I can do the WSM thing on an econo SPS?

Anybody bettin' that Rem will introduce the 7mm WSM on the SPS anytime soon?

270 vs 7mm wsm

The British set a record with 7mmwsm at 1000yards this summer I beleive it was just under 3" 2.86 possibly, the 7mm has a higher BC than the .270 and much better choice of match and hunting bullets at this time, but with Remington not offering there 7s or 700 actions in 7mmwsm the .270 win was made famous by sports writer Jack Oconnor but I did read where he said the .280 Rem was a better cartridge, when relaodeds used in a bolt action guns
Remington brought out the .280 for there semi-auto's and pumps and where not loaded very heavy. kept pressures low maybe 85% of potental

Depends on what you are doing with it...

If you are huting deer it's no big difference, move up to elk and moose and you may find the greater selection of heavier bullets attractive. You may not, either,,,:p

I have been hunting with a 270wsm and I love it. Everything from deer to moose have been taken with it.

270 or 7mm in the same case I choose 7mm every time just on bullet weights available alone. Not anything against 27cal just my preference.

280 over 270
7mmWSM over 270WSM

Ive heard that the 7mm is tetering on the downward spiral, to many 7mms that are faster and or more poplular

7mm-08
280
7mm mag
7mm weatherby
7mm SAUM
7mm STW
7mm UltraMag

vs. the .270 wsm which is near the top performer in its class with limted selection and extreme popularity

.270 win
.270 weatherby

The .270 has been proven to take game all over the world and the wsm just makes it a bit flatter shooting. Id go .270 wsm if I had to choose between the 2 listed.

the 7wsm isnt very popular, probably because the 270wsm took off so well, and the 7mm Rem Mag has a strong following.

the 270 wsm is one hell of a cartridge. there isnt much a guy cant do with a 130 gr TSX-bt @ 3300 fps or a 140 gr Accubond @ 3200 fps

Then again you can do the same thing with a 7mm remag, and have the option of using heavier bullets if you so choose.

NO no. It was a 300wsm necked down to 7mm and re chambered to 7mm that set the record. So get a 300wsm which it is factory chambered in and get a match barrel chambered, and see the factory.... 7mm has a nice flat trajectory and 7mm wsm would be a step up but holly cow I can only imagine the 300wsm necked down to 7mm. To bad my 300wsm is a classic model, and my financial nightmare.

That would be my biggest concern, 7 WSM is not popular. With so many new magnum cartidges out today, some will have to become obsolete and it will become difficult to find factory ammo.

I suspect that is the 7WSM will see the fate.

Not really too concerned about that aspect of it all. Don't really need factory ammo.... If you have a set of 7mm WSM loading dies brass will be plentiful in the .300WSM and .270 WSM so you can just neck down or up to make your own 7mm WSM brass. The rest is simple... ;)

The 270 and the 300 have the same shoulder length(headpsace is the same),
but the 7WSM is different, but it doesn't really matter , 7WSM brass is easy to get!:dancingbanana:
