Im looking at buying a rifle in this calibre.
What is the price difference in ammo on this calibre as oppossed to the win 270.
What is the lightest factory load you can purchase for this calibre.
This will be my first rifle so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Buy a used 270 Win and dont look back... Who knows how long the WSSM is going to be around? And where will you get the ammo? 270 Win is available everywhere.

Who has a 270WSSM??

270WSM-great caliber-I have 2 in Tikka T3 LS models. Great performance with 140gr Accubonds on elk, moose, deer, bears. IMO I would use either 130gr TSX's from Federal or 140gr Accubonds from Winchester. Winchester also has 130 and 150gr XP3's which would be good also.

I recommend a Tikka T3 rifle.

270wsm is a great cartridge, but the ammo will be a little more expensive and not as easy to find. but any decent gun store will have it.. and with the number of rifles in 270wsm selling these days, there is no doubt it will be around for a long time.
I think 130gr are the lightest commonly available ammo, but there are more options for handloaders.

that being said, there is nothing wrong with the 270winchester. cheap and plentiful, and proven

Nothing against the old 270 its great but if you want something with a little more jam. I bought my wife a Browning A-bolt in 270wsm as her first rifle and she has shot a couple of does and a buck with it she loves the caliber/rifle combo. I loved the caliber so much I sold my old faithful 30-06 for a 270wsm a couple years back and have never looked back. On of the best calibers I own. Ammo is a little more money but I if you handload there is very little difference in price. Lightest bullet I know Barnes has some 110 grain TTSX's that I was thinking might be interesting to try. Federal also load these 110 grain TTSX. Anyway good luck I know if you buy a 270wsm you will be very happy with its performance.

My .02$

Well first off, I don't own one, but I have played with one...I do shoot the 270Win. I reckon if I had to have just one rifle for hunting...ya, I know, hope it never comes to that!! I would probably be a T3 in 270 WSM. The reason I say that is b/c it's affordable, just about 100% chance it will shoot well, and that 270WSM should kill everything on the plains and in the mountains...and that's where I spend most of my time, oh ya, it's a light gun, good for walkin'.
Having said all that, b/c I'm a reloader now, I'd probably get it in 270 Win now, as the preformance is so close, the handloader can squeeze a bit more umphf out of the regular Win. Also the added fact that you can buy ammo at any hardware store in the country would be quite important for me.
The 270 WSM is hamstrung with the same problem as the 270 Win...lack of bullet choice...if the 160g max bullet weight doesn't bother you then your
fine...but the WSM doesn't fix that problem, it just makes it go a little faster.
Ok, coffee buzz is fading, hope that helps little.

Isnt going faster better?:p

My wife has owned 2 270Wins over the years, and I currently own a 270WSM.

If you dont reload I'd be inclined to stick with the 270Win.

Is the WSM that much more than the Win, well if 200fps more interests you well yup it sure is. Will game know the difference between the WSM and Win, I doubt it.

The 270WSM is here to stay, regardless of what a lot of the sticks in the mud claim. It all rings to the same tone of the mid 1960's when the 7mm Rem. Mag came out, buy a 270Win they said, it might never last you know.

And back in the 1920's the same was heard about the 270 Win, stick with the 30'06 or a 7x57 you know you never know if this new fangled speedster will survive.

I just bought a 270 WSM Tikka T3 Lite. I reload so ammo isn't an issue, you may not find ammo at Wally Mart or Canadian Tire yet but the local gun shops all carry it. From what I have read it is the most accurate of all the short mags. From reviews etc (was told by staff at SIR/Cabelas and Wholesale Sports) that the 270 WSM is getting very popular so should be around for a long time.
