.270Win at 400m?

I have mixed feelings towards the 270. It's a great coyote and small to medium deer round. It's fast and flat with a great selection of bullets. I know a lot of moose hunters who love it. Personally for elk and moose I'd go bigger with a 30/06 being my personal minimum
I hate to chase wounded game so I generally bring more gun than needed but I haven't been let down by downing this
It sucks that you didn't recover that deer but it seems as though you messed up pretty bad. 350 yards up hill in low enough light that you shot at the wrong animal. No head stamp will fix that

As for dougs hatred for the 270 when he owns a 25/06 I can't figure it out but then again I hate the 308 and love my 25/06

What about a 270 wby Doug? Any better or still just a dog gun? Lol

My .270 is still doing 2300+ fps at 400y. More than enough speed to open up the Partition and more than enough energy to give whatever is hit a very bad day!

Yes, if I shot a super dooper magnum I could hit game in the ankle and still kill them, but I don't shoot critters in the ankle........

Late one afternoon, a decent 4 point whitetail buck was walking across a hay field way out yonder. I estimated him at about 400 yards and it was dead calm out. With a dead solid rest, I held the crosshair at the base of his ear and slowly squeezed one off as he steadily walked. At the crack of the rifle, the buck broke into a run, stumbled then crumpled and slid to a stop with snow flying and all four legs kicking. I later measured the distance at 418 paces. I was using my go-to deer rifle, Win M70 XTR Fwt in .270WCF topped with a Leupold M8 6x. The 140gr Accubond handloads chronograph 2936fps average out of the 22" barrel. The bullet smacked him just behind the front leg and blew out the top of his heart, destroyed the lungs and punched out through the ribs on the off side. This was another in a string of one shot deer kills for this .270WCF albeit the furthest shot I've taken on deer. So will a .270WCF work on large deer at 400 yards? With the right load under the right conditions, you bet it will.
