.270win loading

50.5gr w760 and 150gr Speer BTSP gets me a hair over 3000fps with the very slight beginning of pressure signs. (Slight edge around firing pin indent but not anything else).
Groups MOA at 100yds out of a mossberg patriot.
I find 270 easier to load for them 308.

Its hard to stuff up a 270 so bad that it isn’t a 250 yard deer rifle. Accuracy doesn’t matter much, the last bit of velocity doesn’t mean much so that only leaves the bullet. That used to hard to screw up too, since every .277 bullet made had the 270 Win in mind. You dont need the hardest or softest, sleekest or bluntest ( if that was the only factor) won’t matter, and why would you want the lightest or heaviest?

I’d walk past the .277 bullets swinging a dead cat and buy whatever 130 grain cup and core flatbases you knock down and call it good. Businesses have differing dead cat policies so you never heard it from me.

There are many good gun powders for the 270 Win., check-out reloading manuals or go online. The powder that works the best in my 270 Win. is Alliant Reloder #26, however, it is almost impossible to find at this moment.

I am assuming you are shooting 140-150 grain bullets with r26?

Cabelas is a big fan of this practice. Don't forget to have someone filming you, that #### could go viral on tiktok.

Hey guys

I just picked up a beauty Model 70 in .270win. I have a set of RCBS dies on the way and plan to pick up some powder and bullets to get a load worked up over the summer.

What are guys having good luck with for powder and bullets?

I currently only hunt whitetails, as far as big game goes, and the farthest shot possible in the area I hunt is maybe 250 yards. So I'm leaning towards a 130gr Hornady SSt or Nosler BT. I have lots of Varget handy for my .223 and .308, so may see what I can do with that powder, but would consider others if it's likely to yield better results.

Any experience would be appreciated. Feel free to DM me if you have brass or bullets you might part with, or other advice.

I've never really delved into the 270Win until a few years ago.

Not because I didn't like it or have anything against it.

I have to many "other'' cartridges in other calibers on hand that will give me identical results and the bullets I purchase can be used in other cartridges with different cases, so I didn't feel like I wanted to add another caliber into the mix, that was only being used in ''one'' cartridge. That's all changed now, with several wildcats and new cartridges using the same bullets.

A few years ago, a CGNer had a lovely 270 Win chambered Kimber for sale and I purchased it on an impulse. This rifle really shoots well, considering it's overall light weight and profile with a 22in bbl. Maybe the M5 Swarovski helps? Not likely.

What I've found is that it is acceptably accurate with 130/140 grain bullets by any manufacturer. It shoots the 140s better and I will be trying some 150s this week. A friend has a 270Win made by Cooper, with the same profile and it loves 150s, so I'm going to try them out. That doesn't mean my 6.5x55 is being relegated to the safe.

Back around 25 years ago, I read an article by John Barsness, where he printed out several different "Handloads That Work" for several different cartridges, one being the 270Win.

I fully understand why he wrote the article, as I've kept similar records myself of loads that just seem to shoot well in any rifle that's accurate.

The notes in this article are a really good "starting place" for someone that's just purchased a rifle chambered for a cartridge that's "new to them'' or for a beginner handloader that is familiar with the strength of the rifle being loaded for.

I won't go into more details on the article, other than to state it was in Handloader #181/June/1996.

Barsness printed a load for the 270Win with 150 grain bullets, which generated 2800-2900fps with standard large rifle primers, out of a 22in bbl.

57.0 grains of H4831, under 150 grain bullets (your choice) bullets seated to the depth that fits your magazine or if you prefer to what's stated in a manual.

This is a great hunting load and works well in the cartridges I've handloaded for friends.

He also gave a decent 'varmint' load.

50.0 grains imr4895 under Sierra 90 grn hollowpoint, generating 3100-3200fps out of a 22in barrel.

This load didn't shoot as well as I was comfortable with in my rifle but the left over cartridges I gave to my B in law shot like lazers from his M70 Zastava.

Recoil is minimal with this load.
