Brampton On,
I am currently looking for my first bolt action and am wondering if there is a big difference between 270win and 270wsm i am looking for an all around caliber for everything bear, moose, deer, elk, yotes, sheep i plan to use good bullets so i've herd 150 grains , i already have a lever action marlin 44mag so i'm good for a bush rifle but if i don't carry that i hope to use this bolt gun as my standard i think i like the savage 111fcpx3 package but it only comes in 270win, or i would go with a winchester model 70 in 270wsm if there is a big difference between the two if this won't work my next caliber is the savage in 7mm mag . any input thanks

MW

I have had both and the wsm has a definate edge in the speed and distance department, hits a little harder to. But the cost of ammo being twice as much and the distance factor being negligable unless shooting over 600 yds made me sell the wsm. The 270 win does all i need it to.

Highest i have heard of unless you reload is 150, but a 150gr partition works pretty darn good.
If you want even more you could go with the 7mm mag which is also a very good cartridge, it is available in higher grain wt and ammo is not much more than a 270 win.
Also don't know whether you care about stainless or blued guns but th 114 american classic, savage i currently own is the most accurate rifle i have ever owned. 3 shot groups at 100 are one ragged hole.

well i do have a price point because i am spending my money on 6 or 7 other guns so for my first bolt action hunting rifle i capped it at roughly $500 i do like that savage package deal a lot.

You can compare ballistics using these two links, both loaded with same bullet, 140 gr Nosler Accubond...

.270 WSM...

I like to look at what bullets are doing at 300 yds, zeroed at 200...

.270 Win: 2404 fps, 1796 ft. lbs, -6.7" low

.270 WSM: 2624 fps, 2140 ft. lbs., -5.6" low

Frankly, and IMHO, that's a considerable margin in performance...and no contest.

This is not to knock the .270 Win, which is very capable with a great track record.

But the .270 WSM version is just that much more of a good thing...not to mention the weight advantage of a short action rifle, albeit 6 or 8 oz. one way or the other isn't that much of a deal breaker.

I would go with .270win. Its cheaper to shoot and More comfortable to shoot. I like the idea of shooting more each time I go to the range and both will perfom well on game.

as the others have said, minimal difference in performance as far as the game is concerned.
-some difference in felt recoil (ie. 3lbs or so). in my limited experience, the wsms tend to have a bit more muzzle flip in lighter guns

dance with the 270;)

To me difference is similar to a .280 vs a 7Rem Mag. If they're both shooting... let's say a 154 gr bullet, the 7 Mag will go a bit faster, and therefore shoot a bit flatter. Will the .280 be out of it's league to take the same shot? of course not. Just have to make a bit more of an adjustment in the shot.
To me, the 7Rem Mag and the .270 WSM are very, very similar [but obviously the .284 bullets can get heavier than the .277 bullets] and the .270 is very very similar to the .280. So the question is not "which will make a better hunting cartridge?" because the .270 and the .270 WSM will both be great hunting cartridges. The question you need to ask yourself is "Do I want a magnum?" the magnum will give a couple hundred more fps velocity with added recoil and quite a bit more cost [if reloading then the added cost isn't as much, but is still more than a standard cartridge].
So to answer the original question: is there a difference between the two? Yes. The difference is added recoil, more cost, to gain a couple hundred fps. Will the magnum make you a better hunter? unlikely. Will it make you a better shot? Also unlikely. In fact the added recoil could help you develop a flinch, so it may make you a worse shot. In a real world hunting situation the .270 is every bit as capable as the .270 WSM. But if you want a magnum, then go ahead.

I have a couple magnums. I like them, but I'm under no delusions that they're oh-so much better than my standard cartridges. But sometimes, you just want a magnum. Nothing wrong with that.

What's the difference?

You can walk into Wal-Mart or Canadian Tire and buy .270Win! Or any corner gas station or hardware that carries bullets.

Exactly, and definatly a consideration for someone to keep in mind who isn't into reloading. For someone who is a reloader it's a point of little consequence and the cost difference between the two of 'rolling' your own is virtually nil. Performance wise, roughly the 270 WSM may hold a slight edge by 100 - 150 f/sec over the 270 Winchester.

Brand wise, it's like the choice between Chev and Ford or in addition to that, on how much you want to spend. Nothing shabby about a Savage. They may be considerably less expensive than some of the other brands that are out there, but they shoot. In a different caliber, I have a Savage 112BVSS in 25-06 and with it I have shot one of my best groups. Three shot group measuring 0.486", shot at 185 yds and witnessed by hs4570.

I've never owned a 270 so, I've recently decided to correct that short coming;). I'm in the process of finalising a deal on a Husqvarna model 7000L, in 270 Winchester:D.

Can you hold 1 " at 300 yards during hunting conditions? I doubt it very much. 200 ft/lbs either way makes absolutely no difference, dead is dead.

270 WSM is a 270 Win on steroids, just as a 30-06 is to a 308 Win. Some will say there is no difference but I don't agree, there is a definite difference in trajectory, wind drift, time of flight and lead on running game lets not forget foot pounds of energy, in my opinion the one you will notice the least is the energy but then again will you need the elevated energy, I say better to have it than not.

Would I take the 270 win or thw WSM ?
I would not choose the rifle based on the caliber but instead choose the rifle that better suits my build. The Model 70 especially the Classic FTW is my all time favorite so I am a little prejudiced on my opinion, but I believe it is the best bolt rifle out there anyway. The 30-30 has it's place but all around rifle is not one of them, it is a sweet carying rifle though, for short under 150yds ranges.

:agree:

(And I also like Ruger M77's)

I went for .270 win.

I felt what was going for the "vanilla" .270 was that: factory ammo was common and budget priced, I could form brass from cheap once-fired 30-06 brass if I wanted, and the rifle would hold one more round in the magazine.

The .270 WSM clearly has a performance edge, but I know from experience that the .270 win will put down bears, caribou and moose with one shot at any reasonable hunting range. If I want more power than the .270 win, I've got larger magnums for that anyway.

At reasonable range, the the .270win will do everything that the WSM does, at half the price. To me the cost to performance ratio is highly in the original .270's favour.
