.270win what powder next?

Long time back, 90 grain sierra HP, 48.5 grains of IMR4895 gave me a 5 shot cloverleaf at a hundred yards. But I also inherited many pounds of Win760, good for 9 right up to 130 grain according the Hodgdon online. Been trying to figure out what to do with it, a lifetime supply and then some for me!
What area are you in?

Of course. But when everywhere in your area is sold out of those powders, maybe it's time to try new things.

RL 26 is the powder to use if you really want to have magnum speeds in the 270, specially with heavier bullets. Call Doug at Rayn'er shine in SK. He might have some.

I’ve been using IMR4831 with 130gr Sierra boat tails with great results.

I am picking up some 150gr Nosler Partitions tomorrow and going to load with RL22 or 25 and see how that goes.

Re26. Easy 150-grain 3000fps from a 22” barrel. Faster charges give some pressure signs. A bit of a smokier burn than usual, but not dirty in the bore.

My ladder test with StaBALL 6.5 was also quite promising, it was low on velocity but I am running Berger 140gr VLDs and have yet to play with seating depth (loaded them to magazine max length, some ways past SAAMI and also longer than the Federal Premium load with the same bullet). They were cruising just over 2800 with no pressure signs but the crazy part was the ES, 18 fps. I might use a similar charge with "regular" 150gr bullets and see what I can get out of them, as well as play with the Berger seating depth to see if a couple hundredths makes a big difference.

I did not record any speed, well my chronograph was all over the map, the lighting was non existent. Max book load was listed at 55.5grains, I had no pressure there but my brass was starting to lengthen a bit. ( fired brass headspace )
My medium node appears to be between 54.5-55.0 grains. OCW impacts had good relationship with each other and at 54.9 the group was 0.627". 55.2 had bad horizontal and 55.5 bad vertical. If i bump up above 55.5 I will hit the upper node but it may be too hot to live up there. ( easy bolt lift, no swipe, no happy face, primer was just barely flatter than my starting load.)

Nosler Load Data online says imr4064 was the most accurate powder they tested. imr4350 is in there, and no 4831’s made the cut for the 110 in a 270W. Personally, I’ve found in the last few years, that Nosler data is pretty much always spot on for what I’ve been doing.

I finally picked up some Re26. First tests gave an easy 150-grain 3000fps from a 22” barrel, so the rumours are true. Any faster charges gave some pressure signs on the case. That test had a fairly short seating depth. Will experiment with longer OAL’s in next test. Noticed a bit of a smokier burn than usual, but not dirty in the bore.

Still trying to find RL26 (or any other RL powders really. Seems 15 to 26 are scarce). - dan

In a Tikka rifle I’m using 140gr nosler accubonds with imr 4831 with punching out a dime at 100 yds. Workin on fine tuning that into some long range see how we do!

Depending on which .270 Win I use one liked 57gr of IMR 4831 and the other 56gr with the 130gr Hornady SP Win or Fed brass and a large rifle mag primer CCI or fed didn't matter. Both under 1/2" groups.Mice to moose shot.
