Hey guys I want to try hunting yotes this year with a mod70fwt. 270wsm. Is lighter bullets good with this caliber and buy better optics or go for a 223 edge and optics?

If your goal is to kill the coyotes/have fun and nothing else, then its as good as any. But it will probably make an exit hole that you could stick your head in so if you want to save the hides go with the .22 centrefire.
Good glass is awesome to have, but more guns is also better than less.

I find a 270wsm does a boatload of damage. obviously its going to knock 'em down real hard, which is a good thing, but if you want anything to do with the pelt, go .223. It will still make a mess, but won't be nearly as bad. The wolf I shot in my pic here was shot with a .270 wsm, and my taxidermist still curses my name to this day.

I've heard a couple of guys tell of shooting yotes with 110gr vmax in a 270 and not having exit wounds.

You'll probably just have to give it a go and see.

And report back!

If you can find FMJ bullets for saving the pelt, it is all good. If you want to make them just dead, maybe an SST or ballistic tip, that is fine too.

Don't over think caliber choice, get what you feel you want and have fun!

If that is what you have, use it. Comes time to skin it all you will have to do is pick it up and shake it. They make great practice for your hunting rifle.

It depends on the "better optics". Why would you hunt "yotes" with a 270wsm? I hope you reload and remember to save your brass. Go for the 223.

Yes I reload . I got the 270wsm as a do all caliber.I have a burris fulfield2 3-9 on it and was thinking of replacing it with a bushnel 6500. 2.5-16 x as a do all scope for hunting

What is your pet load for the 270wsm and yotes?

I've blown up a few with a 7mmRM. Not sure how the two calibers compare ballistically, but pelt damage was a bit of an issue. Missing limbs were also a bit of an issue. At least they didn't run far. At all.

270 WSM will be just fine. The pelts won't be worth much, but unless they have come up in price since last year it won't matter.

Get some 110gr V-max bullets and try it out. Should work fine and will give you some year round practice with the firearm.

I have had mixed results using a 264WinMag and 95g V-max bullets (similar to a 270wsm ballistically using 90g or 100g hps or 110g v-max)
Some dogs have had exit wounds and suprisingly about as many didn't and several that didn't were shot relatively close like around 150 -175 yrds

No exit @174yds 264WM 95 grain v-max @ about 3300fps

No exit @ approx 150yds same load with 264WM (correction, very minimal exit about half the size of a dime, where I suppose a piece of the jacket made its way through!)

This hide was taken from one that was walking diectly at me with a different rifle but still a 264 using 95 grain v-max and similar load to the former pics.
He was hit at 187yds in the cheek and the bullet travelled through his neck down into his cavity never exiting

Yes I have shot many broadside that did exit a bit nasty aswell.I have used the 85 grain Sierra hollow point out of my Sendero in 264 and had mixed results with it too,but do remember at least two that had no exit at all using the 85g hp's.

I say get some frangible light .277 bullets and have at it.

Just sayin !

Even a .243 Win will blow them up if it hits something solid. I'm not allowed to show pics. If you want the hides a .22 centrefire is the ticket. If you don't care about the hides like me smokem with what you brung! I'm not a big fan of the fine Multi-X or the DOA600 reticles in the 6500's but you may like them. I have 4200 4-16's regular Multi-X on mine.

Great excuse to go by a 22-250 or maybe 243 ;)

Taken a few coyotes and wolves with my 270WSM and 140g Accubonds...didnt care about the pelts...it was easier to grab this rifle at the tim as the predators were in by the cattle sheds!!

But I used the excuse to buy a Sako m75ss 22-250 couple years ago from a fellow CGN !!
