Hey gurus

The Whelen is heading back off North at some point to hunt the Buff.
I want to load 275gr Woodleighs this time, however the ADI site has no info for heavier than 250gr.

I'll be using Varget/AR2208

Ruger Hawkeye 22 inch tube proberly 1:16 without being certain... if not its a 1:12 isn't it? lol

Will I be able to Stabilise without Trying them>

an What would be some load start points?

Thanks
WL

I've got a Woodleigh manual here, and this is straight from the book.

H4895/Ar2206H start- 48gr for 2088. max- 53 for 2320
Varget/AR2208 start- 50> 2142 max- 55> 2305
RL15 start- 52> 2145 max- 57> 2345
N140 start- 51> 2140 max- 55> 2310

The No.1 rifle in 35 Whelen has a 1:12 twist barrel, so your Hawkeye might be the same I would think  :p -

http://www.ruger.com/products/no1DE/specSheets/21302.html

Woodleigh recommends 1:16 or faster for the 275gr. I prefer the 310gr (Woodleigh recommends 1:14 or faster). Works great on heavy game.

275gr data:

I have an old Nick Harvey Manual (#6). The hottest 275 gr data he lists is Re-15; 51 grs for 2240 and 55 grs for 2400 fps. The next hottest is Winchester 748 where the maximum load of 56 grs produces 2350 fps. Nothing else listed comes close.

50 to 55gr of 2208 is the same for the ADI powders - 250gr Loads though, so I don't know about that?

a member is sending me a bit of info from a ken waters book.

So is there a Fair chance the 275s wont spin??

its not all about Speed mate, il be using strictly AR2208 but have no data for the 275 gr pill!?
my 250gr load is at about 2400 fps... so imagine a 275 at 2200 say....

how much difference is there between this and a 375 Winchester 255gr hard cast at 1900-2000fps.... is that an option???

Not to complicate things, but I am getting 2600 or so over Varget with a 250...... is that an option?, or are your stuck on 275?.....

Brad , my Hornady 250gr load is around or a grain over min charge for ADI, it was the best group an didn't rattle me too much, I expect the 275s to rattle me a bit but a Woodleigh 250gr could be in order if it turns out the 275s wont spin proper, because if a 275 doesn't there wont be much chance of a 310 spinning either..
The Corelokt 250gr which I pulled from Buffalo did work pretty well So it certainly is an option to just load up what I have got... very capable.

the more I think of it the 250 may be a goer anyway, as shots which are not in Tree'd country are on flood plains so can generally get into about 200m-250m depending on the surroundings and situation. I've been practising with that Whelen at 300m and have my Drop organised , although I don't plan on wacking them out that far, the pigs may get a tickle though.. I wouldn't expect to be shootin the 275s much past 200m...

So yep, if these arnt guna work it will be a 250

cheers mate

From the November 2004, 4th edition of ADI's Smokeless Powder Handloaders Guide, the .35 Whelen loaded with a 250 gr bullet has a maximum charge of 55 grs of AR2208, and with a 225 gr bullet the maximum charge is 56 grs. From 200 grs to 250 grs, the maximum powder charge reduces 1 gr for each 25 gr increase in bullet weight. It follows then that a maximum load for the 275 is 54 grs, that reduced 10% is a starting load of about 50 grs, which nicely matches the data provided by Slamfire.

yeah when ya look at it like that, doesn't look too wrong, even down to 180 th charge is like 57... cool

where to start with finding out if these (275) will spin properly? or is it trial an error?

somewhere id seen a method or something to calculate twist for stability including bullet length??? did I not

this is the 275 grain data that I have, from the Hogdon 26th edition- nothing exactly matches your bullet/powder combination, but for perspective, 24" barrel, max loads, max velocity fps:
H380 58gr 2236
BLc(2) 57gr 2390
H335 51gr 2292
H4895 51gr 2313
H322 49gr 2241
IMR 4320 52gr 2250
IMR 4895 50gr 2292
IMR 4064 52gr 2296
IMR 3031 49gr 2261
W760 59gr 2290
W748 56gr 2344

I think its a 1:16 slammy? I'm googling.

"Some were actually made with 12" twist and some with 16" - though Ruger always only published 16" for them.

Ya gotta check each rifle with a tight patch to know. Been on that for a few years now myself - checking twist on various 35Whelen Hawkeyes. It'll be obviously one or the other when u check."
