-28°C Feels like -38 Think my hunting season is over......

It is no longer fun but an endurance test when its that cold! I know I have hunted a few times in late December, early January for elk here in Manitoba by Riding Mountain when it has been -40 without a windchill!

This is one of the main reasons I took up archery and muzzle loader hunting. In Sask. You get Sept with the bow and Ocqt with the front loader. I have had the good fortune to fill my tags ninety percent of the time in the nice weather. If I have to brave the cold I will but as I age my tolerance for the cold is shrinking. For me the perfect day is sunny and about five degrees. Oh and deer running all over the place helps too.

Yup...-32 here this am. I have my one and only tag still unfilled and 8 deer feeding right outside the house at the moment but at that temp their welcome to eat their fill and I'll just enjoy watching them...must be that "getting old" thing. At one time I was like Sheephunter and it didn't matter if it was -45, the last days of the season were used to the fullest.

Can't imagine that ever changing especially with a foot of fresh snow and bluebird skies but you never know I guess. This season seemed way too short! This afternoon should be a good one. The only thing I know for certain is that if I stay home these last two days that I'll have more decorations for the tree...if I go out....who knows!

Last December I got a chance to hunt out of my friends new elevated blind he had built on his property next to Riding Mountain park. He built it 16' high to the floor and is on top of a hill so excellent views from the dual pain picture windows he installed and heated by a propane heater! A couple of easy chairs for comfort and a stove for coffee and hot soup. It was the most comfortable I have ever been on one of these late season elk hunts I have ever been! The elk did not co-operate for the entire week and were moving thru the area well before and after legal light!

Coldest I've hunted in is -35 (Bison), but it's all about what you wear. Dress for it and it's a complete non-issue, in fact cold clear days are some of the most beautiful out there. We're Canadian, get out there. ;) This said, strong words I'm laying out as I'll be hunting in Mexico in a couple weeks. Going soft I suppose.

It isn't the keeping warm or being out in the cold for people. That can be dealt with and handled quite comfortably.

It is what the cold does to everything else!!! The now dead animal , the equipment , etc......

Too many times I have tried to skin frozen animals.Yes I have a heated place to do that now but drop an animal in -20 or cooler gut it get it hung and not have heat, oh boy oh boy!

I wouldn't be caught dead going out to hunt in these temps. I did it for many years and now I would rather just find some other warm pass time instead. Like cleaning my guns, organizing my pics or cruising CGN. Right now I am at work on a short break getting warmed up. When it gets like this out and you are out in it all day, day after day it makes you want to ask for a layoff, lol! I used to love winter and all that went with it, now I hate it!!

I just got back with the two GSP's.
Took them out on a bench just east of here.
Nice easy walk, suns up and a bit nippy.
Put the jackets on the fur and let them go.
About 45 minutes into the walk and figured it was time to tern around
and circle back.
Then the wind hit...........fruck it's cold on the face and ears.
Now I know why they call them ball caps..........wear'im at bawl games.

-22 here this morning, foot of powder ....... can't even make a fricken snowman it's so cold hehehehe

on the bright side, the ice is getting thicker on the lake every day and I'll be puggin yotes while ice fishin to kill time real soon :D
