I am using a PW800B for 28 ga, and have been given a bunch of Challenger / Kent hulls which I would like to load.
All data I have tried using the Fed. wad and Universal leaves a dished crimp.
Anyone got experience loading these hulls???
Thx

Challenger is the only hull I use for 28 gauge and I love them (I guess because they are free and noone seems to want them). I'm on about 3-4 reloads at this point and they have some life left yet. I'm using data from Hodgdon for Fed hulls;

Lead Shot 28 3/4 oz. SR 7625 Win. 209 Fed. 28S1 15 11,200 PSI 1200 FPS

They dish slightly with homemade 7.5 shot but works fine for me (worse with factory 8s) but I think I'm dropping a bit light.

I'm going to try;

Lead Shot 28 3/4 oz. SR 7625 Win. 209 WAA28 14.5 10,800 PSI 1200 FPS

so I can use Claybuster Win replacement wads.

Since the hull capacity is slightly larger in the Challengers a bulky powder is best, but the only powder I've used is 7625.

In regards to the orig. post, your wad should match the hulls internal capacity, if it does not, you will have "fallen in" crimps and possibly poor or inconsistent ignition. A wad with a slightly higher cushion section should fill out the case better and allow proper crimping, however you may be in uncharted water as far as recommended and tested loads. I try to use only components that match published data, changing any one component can drive pressures up or down.

I like the Challenger 28 hulls too! I have about 6-8 firings so far with out a failure. My load is...

Challenger hull
Winchester 209
13.4 gr Longshot
WWAA28HS
3/4oz 7.5 or 6

However, i recently bought a bunch of the Claybuster 5034 replacements for the Winchester AA28 wads and mine are falling in a bit too. Will experiment a bit too see whats happening.
