28 ga HS hulls - a loading question

Early on when the AA - HS came out in 28 ga. they were a little "short" when compared to the existing AA.
They are also a little shorter than the current AA-HS.
I have about 20 gallons of mixed old (short) and new AA-HS hulls to sort priot to loading.
Any way short of measuring to tell the difference?? headstamp?? case print???
I seem to be short of the enthusiasm required to measure each one.

Not positive, but is there a line under the AA or something on the newer (or perhaps older) hulls? This sounds familiar, and I think that was the solution for identifying the HS.
 
When I sort AA-CF and AA-HS hulls I find the CF are matt finished and the HS are shiny.

Not sure if they are all like that but my examples are in 12 ga
 
Probably did not explain this well......
All the hulls are AA H-S.
AA H-S hulls are of 2 lengths.. the earlier mfg being marginally shorter than the more recent.
I am looking to differentiate between these two types of AA H-S without meausing the OAL (empty) of each one.

I don't know any quick way from the outside markings but I just mark a pencil with a line and can seperate them pretty easy that way from the diff in the base height.
Or I will trade you some 28ga STS, federals, etc for them
 
EvilDezel.... I finally got a chance to measure and you are correct.
The line under the HS are the longer hulls.

The Young Gun is a handy accessory to have hanging aound the reloading room!!!!!
20 gals of 28 ga hulls in a day........ a great use of my genetic material !!!

Having solved this issue.... anyone able to get 800X to meter accurately through a progressive loader?????

Thanks for the info. I learned something new tonight:) Still using up my stash of old compression formed and hope they will last a few more years
When you say longer HS they are the same length as the old compression formed from the ones I have, don't have too many of the short HS ones

Yes, I have been loading them with the old wads. They seem to work as well as the older compression formed hulls.
 
Here's a link that might help. Most of the time the ones with the HS underlined are longer but FWIW I measure mine. I got a bunch of Super Sport given to me recently and they were all short.

I've never used 800X... what kind of problems do you think are causing the metering issues?

I've loaded a lot of 700X. I had issues with that powder caused by static electricity. You could see the static holding up the flakes of powder. I would rub down the powder bottle (inside and out) with a 'dryer sheet' (Bounce) and would even cut a strip and suspend it from the top of the powder bottle, and leave it in there.

I would use a powder baffle to help with more consistent powder drops. Also I wouldn't let the powder bottle get much less that 1/4 full.
