Decided to give my 1971 made 20 gauge Featherlight M37 a little break in it's shooting career.
Just sealed the deal on a second hand M37 in this other slightly smaller sub-gauge.

Any real input from other 28 gauge upland game bird hunters??

I just shot my 18th pheasant this year, with the 18th shot taken, with my 28 gauge AYA number 2 SxS. I have used a 28 gauge exclusively for pheasants for the past several years. I also used a 28 gauge while acting as a gunner for the local NAVHDA tests, and every shot brought down a bird. I will add that all of my hunting is done over pointing dogs. I use Fiocchi Golden Pheasant loads exclusively for hunting.
 
I believe they just came out with one.........I also shoot a 28......the earliest shells were shorter than 2 3/4" BTW....If it's flying ,running or standing at 40 yards it's dead...Harold
 
One of the 28 gauge Benelli self loading shotguns is available in 3 inch.Also I believe there is an O/U on the marked available in 28 gauge 3 inch.

I have an Ithaca Model 37 in 28 gauge that I purchased the first year they came out in 2009.It is the only 28 gauge that I have used in the uplands since I purchased it.Mine has 26 inch barrels.For myself, I prefer the shorter barrels on my 28 gauge shotguns.

Been using 28 gauge shotguns in the uplands for over 40 years.Great gauge for that use.

Nice to hear others opinions here.
The one tiny fly in the ointment is total lack of factory made 28 gauge slugs.
Purely for a just in case scenario.

Am considering replacing birdshot with a single .50-.53 calibre RB for an ad hoc (close range) slug.

Differing thoughts on this kind folks???
 
There are new 28 gauge slugs available.Also older C-I-L Imperial slugs are to be found at gun shows if one asks around a bit.

Warning these 28 gauge slug shells are not cheap.
 
Agreed - I picked up 3 boxes of 28 gauge slugs from a vendor in Nova Scotia.... mostly for when I hunt ptarmigan in G-bear country. No troubles yet! They were very expensive, but I feel better having a few in my pocket. Should last me forever...

Or until I actually run into G-bear trouble!!

To me, no gun is too pretty to hunt with, if I own them, I use them.I purchase my Fiocchi shotshells from Prophet River Firearms. As for my Drahthaar pup, he weighs 78lbs and isn't yet 9 months. I shot the 20th pheasant over him yesterday, and he is very good at finding and pointing birds.I do have to keep working on him holding steady at the flush and at forced fetch, but for his age, he is doing very well.

Have you had a chance to try the Ithaca Model 37 28 gauge out yet?What length barrel does it have?
 
I did not even ask I was so darn happy to just find one for sale in Canada. Been looking south of the border and most of them start at 1200 US.
Know it's factory new as of two years ago and comes with 4 removable chokes. Blueing 95%.

EDIT; On its way from Epps. I live in Cold Lake.
 
Just picked up Cabalas last Browning 28 gauge pump, not too long ago, to make the switch from 20 gauge. Like it a lot for grouse.
 
^Well. I don't have it hand yet......but all the literature on-line says that the Ithaca is built on a smaller 28 scale frame-receiver.

This is where a present owner should add his information perhaps?

Edit: I just called Epps for addition info; vent rib barrel of 28 inches in length.
Am happy with that because in the bigger 20 I personally found the 28 inch length a very natural pointer. :)
