28 gauge question??

So I have a new pup on the way (weimeraner) and I have over 650 pheasant eggs in the incubators, and I think I better add a nice 28 gauge O/U to the mix as well. I don't want to spend a lot, certainly less than a $1000, and much less than that if I can get a decent gun. Fancy and pretty don't matter to me, just functionality really. I am thinking about the Stevens 512 Goldwing, but I do not know anyone who has one in Canada. I have no logical reason for wanting a 28, but I already have three 12s, a SxS, semi, and a pump, so if I spend the $$ for a new gun I thought it would be fun to try a new gauge too.

Please lets hear what you have to say!:)
 
The CZ shotguns are in the $1,000 range. Not bad guns for the price from what I've seen of them.

There is no logical reason to have a 28 gauge. The problem is that once you start shooting the 28 you'll find no logical reason NOT to have one. :)
 
Keep us informed on the weimer. I got oe last year and she did much better than I expected on huns and sharptails. This year I want to try wild pheasants as well.

I know a grand aint a lot to spend, but I am spending the $$ on the pup so I will have to make due with a little less gun. As long as it shoots straight is all I care for now.

The Mossberg looks interesting!

AWESOME pics!! I can't wait to get my pup, the breeader had two litters in the past two weeks, and my pup is coming out of one of those litters.

Does it have to be an O/U?
I think there was a nice 870 in 28 on the exhange.....

Thanks Cat! And no, it does not have to be an O/U, but I thought if I was buying something new, I might try something different from what I already have. Like I said, I already have a semi, SxS, and a pump. An O/U would be a nice addition to the shotty stable.
 
You might find a used Red Label for a grand. I bought a new BPS for well under $1000 and I have a Spanish o/u 28 that I picked up for $800 so they are around. The problem with the 28 is that they are so great one is not enough. Good luck

The 28 gauge Franchi 48 AL shotguns are great shotguns.I have two of them and never a minutes trouble with either of them.I am sure you will be well pleased with how the 28 gauge performs.
 
Well I picked up the Stevens 512 Goldwing in 28 today. A nice piece actually, fit and finish seems good, action is tight (hopefully it loosens up a bit). It swings well, and comes to the eye very well when shouldered. The best part is it comes with 5 choke tubes and selectable barrels. The only down side I can find is the safety is completely manual, it does not return to the safe position after the action is opened. I only fired about a half a box of ammo as it was getting dark, but I never missed and my buddy hit a couple too.

The little 28 is impressive, no recoil and it turns clays to dust real nice!:dancingbanana:

There have been several Citoris on the EE boards for a $1000 and less in the last few months. Thats way more gun than you can purchase new for $1000.
 
I don't see a problem with the non auto safety. Especially if you have other guns, the semi, pump etc which do not have auto safeties. It means you just carry on applying the safety and do not let a mechanical device allow you to become complacent. If you were to have the auto safety on one gun and not others you may find that you forget to apply it on your semi or pump.

In 28 gauge? I check the EE regularly haven't seen any 28 gauge Citoris, much less one going for under $1,000.

The gun will loosen up with use. Make sure you keep the hinge lightly lubricated with some grease or oil. The automatic safety is a matter of taste and people generally either love them or loathe them. I don't mind them on a field gun but can live without them. I hate them on any gun that I'm going to use for targets.[/QUOTE]

Now you know the reason to buy a 28 gauge. Ammo costs are more expensive with a 28 and there lower cost options as there are with the 12 and 20. If you shoot it a lot you might want to consider reloading. If not shoot Winchester AAHS or Remington STS (NOT Federal Gold Medal) for practice and sell the hulls on the EE. Ten cents each wouldn't be unreasonable and you might even get 15.
 
I understand what you are saying about the auto safety, I have a SXS 12 that has an auto safety and I guess I just ASSumed that all break open shotguns had an auto safety.

I do plan to reload for the 28. When I picked it up yesterday, I bought 5 boxes of Challenger shells (that was all they had). Does anyone know if they are suitable for reloading? I just need to get the conversion kit for a 700 VersaMEC and a reloading manual and then I'll be all set.
 
My brother and his wife breed Weims down in Windsor. Just wondering if you got one of his pups. They are great bird dogs, they made my past two pheasant hunts that much better.

You can get a Baikal SXS new for about $600 ish and they work just fine.

I myself would someday like to get a Rem1100 in 28 or a higher end SXS. I had a Baikal for awhile and traded it for a Stevens Fox in 410. I never fired the Baikal but was tempted to keep it (part of a lot I bought) My wife had one in 20 Gauge and it saw a fair bit of action.
