Wow! This thread is up to five pages! I am impressed and very pleased with all the info I am gaining thanks to you guys. I am going to try to get out this weekend and give my new little sweetheart a work out at the gun club. All I have for ammo right now is Challenger 2 3/4" #6s, but they will work for now. I will let you know how I make out.

Around the same time I bought my 28 ga. o/u #### Cheney shot his lawyer buddy in the face & then got him to apologize for getting in the way of a nice phesant! It goes without saying the razzing I took for coming out to the skeet field with a "Tricky Dicky". (insert moans & laughs here)... Great gauge though & starting to catch on more with the help of some gun rag writers.
I have been using the 28 gauge for over forty years.When I first started using the 28 gauge there were few shotguns available for the gauge.At the time the Winchester and High Standard pumps were out of production.The Remington 11-48 auto loader in 28 gauge was also out of production.A few single,SXS and over unders were about all one could buy.
The only shotshells available were paper.
Over the years the 28 gauge has slowly increased in use.At present there are quite a few different 28 gauge models available.Over the years the 28 gauge has increased in use as more people discover its great pattern and more models appeared on the market.

Cashman: If you have a nice 12 now,have you thought about tubes?? I just picked up briley champanion tubes in 28 with chokes for around $400.00. The nice thing is that I am still shooting the same gun.The thing is they only have ones for certain guns. They are light and add less then a 1lb to my shotgun. IMHO, as a field model, the 28ga CZ Bobwhite represents very good value overall considering it's price point and in light of the following.....
- Appropriately scaled frame/balance
- Acceptable fit/finish quality
- Well regulated barrels
FYI, a search on this Fourm will bring to surface an extensive review done a while back by members here - Sharptail and straightshooter. If one prefers a good pointing sxs with an English stock, DT and splinter forend (well, actually the CZ's schnabled
) then one won't be disappointed with this particular model .I like that idea too, same gun different guage...very cool. However I do not have a gun suitable for that type of modification. I picked up the Stevens and it is a suprisingly nice litle gun. It is properly scaled for the guage, light weight, points like a dream, and there is next to no recoil. I going to try to get it out today for a little skeet shoot...backyard style.
I like this gun so much, I might pick up another in 20 guage.
For most of my 28 gauge hunting I use improved cylinder or modified.My AYA is choked modified and full.The full is probably a bit tight for most 28 gauge usage outside of ducks or pheasants.
For all around use the modified is in my opinion the best choke for the 28 gauge.
The best pattern I have ever obtained from any of my 28 gauge shotguns is from a Remington Model 11-48 skeetgun using Remington Express with 7 1/2 shot.That pattern is as even as any I have ever seen.
To be honest I have not shot test paterns with the gun yet. I have been spending all my available time hunitng with it and my new pup. The gun seems to kill very well and I am using improved cylinder and modified chokes with Challenger factory shells in #6. I have also bought a case of Remington STS in #8 but I have not shot any of that yet, and I am also reloading the used Challenger hulls with #6 and they seem to work well too.
I plan on getting out and do some testing as I am learning more about shooting and reloading. I am actually very pleased with how well this little gun works for the money I have into it. In fact I think I might buy another in either 12 or 20 gauge just for giggles.

I've one that weighs a little under 5.6lbs (the advertised weight). Screw-in, comes with 5 choke tubes. The 28ga (and 20ga) Bobwhites are reasonably good deals from a perspective of field models for Upland.
