i'm looking into buying a new 28 gauge as my remington model 812 is getting pretty beat up from all the use and abuse it's gotten over the years.(it was my mothers gun, bought in the late 70's) anyway the single shot has done me pretty well over the years but i'm looking into something more along the lines of a side by side. i know beretta and a few other companies make em but i'm having a hard time deciding on what i should get because the price of new ones has gotten way out of control. any ideas on this little problem i've got? i can't afford the 2-3k$'s needed for a real fancy one but i'd love to find something rugged, durable, and reliable that doesn't brake the bank. any help y'all could give me would be wonderful. thanks

Stoeger makes them for about $400. If your willing to get something in pump browning makes a BPS for about $600 Talk to the great guys at Prophet River as they can bring one if faster then most people if they don't have one is stock. I was looking in to getting one but I got one really cheap second hand from a guy on 28gasociety. It's light it hits what I point it at and best of all it's deadly out to the same distances as my 12 gauge is so why pack around an extra 3 or 4 lbs for upland.

Cheers

stay away from the Stoeger and Baikal they are of vary poor quality Cz is well built $900-1300 depending on model If you look a pumps the browning BPS is excellent handling shotgun also the Remington wingmaster not the express .

i think the CZ is probly the way to go. i don't like the fixed chokes that come standard on the others. i'm looking for something with full chokes and the longest possible barrel. i like a tight pattern and being able to take a bird out of the air even if it's pretty far away.thanks for the help guys.

I have a Remington 870 28 gauge Express and it works well.It does not have the high grade wood or finish of the 28 gauge 870 Wingmasters I have owned in the past but mine works just as well.

In the past I owned a 28 gauge Remington Model 812.Made in South America if I remember. The C-I-L Models 401 and 402 were the same shotgun as the Remington Model 812 if I remember rightly.

I have seen used Charles Daly 28 gauge auto loaders selling for less than $500.Some really like the Charles Dalys while others are not so fond of them.

In terms of the longer bbl - the Browning pump with 28in bbl may be something to look at if the weight (@ 7 Lbs ) will not be a detriment.....you'd agree that it does defeat the purpose of a 28ga shotgun.

The 28ga 870 Wingmaster (with 25in bbl) is also a nice pump action and weighs aprox the same as the CZ sxs....actually that oughtta read as CZ 20ga.....the 28 is under 6lbs.

The CZ Bobwhite is a great field model sxs in it's price range. If memory serves, there were a couple of those advertised (shotgun exchange section here) a few months ago.

All of the above come with screw-in chokes.

I wouldn't call the stoeger of very poor quality. I will admit it has a fairly weak bluing job but the gun will handle the same amount of abuse as the more expensive SxS well out in the field just as easily and locks up just as tightly. I'm sure there are some lemons out there but your broad stroke dismissal of a budget gun with no specific reason sounds rather elitist/snobby of you. My stoeger has taken grouse out to over 33 yards same with rabbits (due to the Imp cyl/Mod chokes that's about the max range my SxS is good for, give or take a few yards). Your saying it's still a piece of Crap or did I luck out and get one of the few that's not?

Handloading your own shells would also be a good idea after you have a few boxes of Empty shells to reload. Hope you enjoy the 28 gauge.

Seems to me that Savage/Stevens makes an inexpensive 28 gauge O/U($600.00 range) ,Model 512 Goldwing. Also Mossberg makes a 28 gauge O/U Silver Reserve that is not too pricey.

Maybe you could check them out?
